It has been brought to my attention that I've been neglecting my GX470, I let the oil change interval go to 12K kms, I normally change it at 8, oops. Somehow it's been a year. I've been driving a lot less than normal and I guess underestimated how much mileage I've put on it.
So last night I got an oil change done, rotated the tires, topped up tire pressures, inspected brakes, greased the driveline, topped up coolant, and washed it.
I still have a leaking valve cover gasket I'd like to get dealt with before winter sets in, and give the interior a good going though. And get the Pioneer head unit working again...SD card corrupted for the 2nd time and I've been putting that off for way too long as well. And the AC evaporator...the joys of an older vehicle.
Finally replaced the rear wiper arm. The spring on the old one had gotten weak and I wasn't getting full sweep coverage over the glass.
And since it's old plastic and I don't know what I'm doing, I was sure I'd break the cover (didn't) so ordered one of those too.
The arm is p/n 85241-60110 and is about $80.
The cover is p/n 85292-35010 and is about $7
Note that the arm is the part closest to the pivot. The part that holds the rubber blade is separate.
To replace it, pull the cover off (pry the ends apart then lift off), pivot the arm up so it's perpendicular to the glass. Remove the 10mm nut then wiggle the arm off (the shaft is splined and makes a matching spline in the soft aluminum insert of the arm). Pivot the wiper-holder away from the arm to release it (there is a clip molded in to the arm)
When reinstalling make sure the arm goes back on pointed to the left before tightening the nut.
Did this myself over the weekend, as well as rear shocks. Still waiting on things to break in...a lot more juttery than I was expecting. Hopefully an alignment corrects what i'm feeling, though it's likely the combo of Arnott bags and Luftmeister shocks not being quite the quality of OEM. On clean roads it rides as good as stock though.
First snow today, so I'm glad I've switched over to winter tires recently. Did an inspection, with iPhone camera pics, in each wheel well. The rear looks like rust and corrosion are taking a toll on the linking arms and the height adjustment levers. Rock Auto has the height sensors but not sure if they're OEM? Ah, the joys of an aging fleet.
I bought this '06 last week and joined the Lexus world. Coming from a 2013 Cayenne S and loving the simplicity of the GX. Wanted something less precious I could beat on a little and not worry about my kids destroying. It's a little rough but drives really nicely. Of course I've already ordered some fun parts for it including wheels and a headunit, and will be removing and painting the faded wood trim and generally making the interior a little nicer place to be.
It's got a few gremlins and need some rust touch-up done but happy to have it.
Purchased an 04 and had to pick up some Taco wheels, and added new 265/70/17's as my stocks were pitted and nasty and the tires dry rotted. Gotta love those shady used dealers lol. Bags ended up leaking so I changed my rear bags and shocks to Arnott and Luftmeister. Not a bad job at all. The hardest part was the line clip above the bladder. I'll be doing the fronts if I can sort out the issues I'm having with ride quality. If it turns out the Luftmeister are garbage and it's not a fault somewhere in the connection, I'll have to go the Bilstein route. I really wanted to retain the factory adjustability and heard good things about Luftmeister. We'll see if I can troubleshoot things out.
Also installed LED hi's and lo's, LED drl and switchback turns, and reverse lights. Made a world of difference. Lots left to do, but I think I got a solid one. 143k with light scaling here and there on the undercarriage. Plans include rear spoiler, grille, passenger side mirror, front struts and 1.5" levelling kit (rear washer hack), non-nav conversion, and stereo/speaker upgrade. Definitely a good detail as well lol.

Slowly refinishing and re-coloring the interior. Too much beige in this era of Toyota/Lexus for me, and I really love the interior materials and color palettes from later gen Lexus products, so trying to channel that a bit. A bit of paint/dye and some texture changes can go a long way. My palette for the GX will be saddle brown (BMW Luez Cinnamon), black, and satin champagne accents.
Yesterday I worked on finishing up my shift *****.
More interior work today. Got my aftermarket steering wheel pretty well sorted. Airbag and perforated leather dyed in cinnamon brown (it looks less red/orange in real life), emblem painted satin champagne, buttons done in matte black. Pleased with how this came out and so much nicer than my crusty old OEM wheel.
Thanks, I want to do it two-tone saddle brown and some of the stock beige. Some stuff will probably stay black too because it’s just easier. I want to fix and flock the dash in black, as well as the grey upper surfaces in the doors.
Winter is almost here so the frame may rot out before I get to all of this…
It’s not much but it’s coming together. New F-Sport style grill, new sport package headlights, new CV928 wheels… looking a little better than when I got her.
