Hey guys. I'm contemplating a lengthy roadtrip to Alaska and back this summer. Once we get out west, I'm thinking that we will do quite a bit of off-the-beaten path type of camping along the way.
I'd rather not tow a camper if at all possible since I'd really rather use the space out back for the mountain bikes. Rather, I am thinking about a rooftop tent setup from Autohome. Have any of you used one of these before? I'm just trying to gauge the pros/cons. I'm interesting in the good, the bad, and/or the ugly...

you might consider a trailer from these guys. http://www.adventuretrailers.com/trailers.html
It's an expedition trailer with a rooftop tent AND a hitch receiver on the back of it. So you could load your moutain bikes on the trailer still.

Bikes on a hitch rack can be a great way to transport them but if your travel plan includes many miles of dirt roads and you are particular about your bikes I would recommend that you load bikes using a roof rack, or inside if possible to keep the inevitable dust & dirt from accumulating on the bikes chain & gears. When we are out on extended trips I like to minimize bike maintenance time in favor of maximizing ride time & other adventures. Happy travels!
