Always safety first
Just something that I'd like to add since road safety was a major part of my job. (recently retired)
Nobody wants to be in the position of being forced to the side of the road because of a breakdown. But chances have it that it could happen to you. The shoulder of the road can be a very hazardous place to be, indeed, no matter how far you get off the traveled portion of the road.
One thing that I have done is pack two(one for my wife, just in case) reflective safety vests in a plastic shopping bag inside the cubby where my jack fits. Not only are these highly visible at night but also attract a lot of attention during the daylight hours. So put safety first and make yourself visible if you are ever caught in this type of situation.

I have a hand sized emergency strobe light. It has a velcrove strap on it, or you can just set in on your back bumper or ground. It pulses a very bright light, about every 5 seconds. It will get your attention, even in sunlight.
