Default Scary noises during GX search

So, my search for a GX continues; today, I drove a 2005 GX with 93,000 that had just come into the local dealer and had not even been detailed yet. While sitting in car with salesman, he showed me the height control and while it workek, it seemed to take a while, and there were several relatively prominent "thunks" that came from the rear during the raising process. The salesman, who I did not feel was trying to fleece me said that since it had been driven by a woman, that there was a likelihood that it had not been used much, and this was just the airbags getting broken in. Thoughts on this? Should I be concerned?

On the test drive, right around 80mph, there is a VERY quiet whine under load. The noise is only under load, if I take my foot off the accelerator, the noise is gone. As I mentioned, very, very quiet, but it is still there. Any thoughts on what it could be? What are potential consequences?

I've not seen the full service history, but they will be pulling it up for me on Monday.

What do you think? Seem legit?!

Do you know how the adjustable rear suspension works? Those noises aren't right and neither is the seller's explanation.

Per my reading here, the quiet gear whine noise is somewhat common and ok.

Keep your wits. If it looks like a ducks, smells like a duck and walks like a ducks ... consider it a duck. Don't make excuses.

Not convinced one way or another, I think the salesman was just theorizing, it wasn't a case of "don't worry, they all do that" or anything.

To answer your question; no, I don't know how the rear suspension works, but the thunk did seem abnormal.

The whine is the transfer case. Some small amount of noise is normal, especially for that mileage. It moans when you step on the gas, noise goes away when you let off the gas. This truck is due for the 90K timing belt and water pump servicing/ replacement, if it hasn't been done. $750 to $1000.

You have two air bags in the rear, shouldn't creak. It could be the shocks or the sway bar, making some noise. Takes about 30 seconds for ridge height changes, not quick. Some will suggest that you have your own mechinic review this vehicle before purchase. Good luck.

Our '08 has the whine @ 75-80 mph. Not a problem. The air bag clunks may or may not indicate a problem. Ours doen't clunk. Worst case is an expensive fix for the air bags, PLUS the timing belt/water pump. Unless this is a truly "smokin' deal" you may just consider walking away.

My 07 with 95k makes a pretty good 'thunk' when it hits bottom on the height adjustment. I am guessing it is the bumper stop but haven't looked. I did measure the amount of travel at the trailer hitch and it goes from 16.5" to 19.25" (ground to the top of the 2" receiver). I would say the 30 second travel time between positions sounds about right. I certainly would not let a little noise stop me from buying the truck but I would ask to talk to a service tech. Also, my GX was due for the timing belt @ 90 and I asked for a belt and H2O pump at cost (used car lot gets work done at cost). It was $800. Good luck to you. Mike

I use the height adjustment quite a bit on my 04 with 83K. There is no noise at all other than the compressor. No clunks during the process or at the bottom. I still have original shocks back there too.

Just fyi, I tried the height adjustment again and it is quiet as can be. I little compressor hum and that was it. I don't know if the previous owner ever used the feature or not. Maybe it just needed to be 'woken up' and run through a couple cycles.
