Default Introduction 2008 GX470

Hello Club Lexus!

I am new to the Lexus family. My wife and I currently own a 2005 Toyota 4runner Sport Edition 4X4 V8. I wanted to surprise her with a Lexus since she has always wanted one. So the Toyota went from being hers to now mine and, she gets the Lexus GX470. I picked it up from a guy on Guam for $25,500. It only has 54,000 miles. Sorry for no pictures. I am currently on deployment and made the deal using all emails. the only pictures I have seen were from Craigslist. I will get some up when I return. My wife and I are stationed on the Island of Guam in the south Pacific. A little about me, I am an E-6 in the Navy and, have been in for 7 years. I work on the MH-60S knighthawk helicopter as an aviation machinist mate.

So what are the things to expect out of the Lexus and the common problem areas. I would use the search function but, the internet on ships is like the dial up days when AOL first came out. Anyone that has been out to sea on a Navy boat can tell you...its slow!

Sorry for the long read. just wanted to introduce myself.

I didn't realize they sold Lexus in markets other than US/Canada, interesting! Welcome to the site!

Drivetrain wise, this is the same truck as your V8 4Runner, and it has the same rear air suspension as an '03-'08 Limited 4Runner, so no surprises there for you guys.

Thanks for the info. There is a Lexus dealer on the island but, I bought it via private party. The original owner bought it brand new from the Lexus dealer. I have not been able to drive it yet. The wife says she is in love with it!

Welcome to CL, it is a lovely truck, and 2008 for that price, is a steal at that mileage. You will not regret buying this truck. The problems for your model on the suspension is not high, as the generally models between 2003-2007 were pretty bad, and the Clunk/ Thump on the Rear Axle. See the sticky. Otherwise regular maintenance, this truck is a fine low maintenance one for years to come. Other than that the usual wear & tear of Pads, Tires, Batteries are common. Anyway Welcome again, we have a great group of active members who care & share on the GX platform. So hopefully you would enjoy.

Man777, thanks for the info! My wife and I were going to wait till we get back to the states to buy her the GX. When I found it on Craigslist at that price, I had to jump on it!

Welcome aboard! Like the others are saying, these trucks are bulletproof. I have a 2004 with 158k on it, and the ONLY thing wrong with it is the power outlet in the cargo area doesn't work... The fuse is good, so i'm going to blame the previous owner for plugging in their rotisserie oven on thanksgiving!

Sorry to dig up an old thread, been back from deployment and loving the Lexus! Have a few questions...

1 The reverse sensors don't beep when I back up close to anything. Is there a way to turn them on? The actual sensors are in the rear bumper.
2 I can't get the DVD sound to work. It's the Lexus DVD system. Is there a trick for it?
3 the leather is a little bit worn, who do you guys recommend for really nice fitting seat covers that do not look like crap?
4 the dash is not cracked and I want to keep it that way. Dash cover/mat? What have you guys done to prevent it from cracking?

Sorry for all the questions. Have not had time to really look around the site or download manuals. Thanks for all the help CL!

Pictures tomorrow after a good wash and wax.

-You sure they're OEM? I've never seen parking sensors as an option, only the rear camera.

2 I can't get the DVD sound to work. It's the Lexus DVD system. Is there a trick for it?
-You should hear sound as soon as it starts to play on the screen. There's a way to bring up the diagnostic menu so you can run a check on it. I'm not at a computer to do a search or I would. Search around, there's several that show you how to do it.

3 the leather is a little bit worn, who do you guys recommend for really nice fitting seat covers that do not look like crap?
-This site has some nice covers. Several Tundra / 4Runner owners are using them. They have many different fabric, color, options available.

-There's really nothing you can do to prevent it. You can put a dash pad on it but they look hideous to me, not knocking anyone that has one. If your dash isn't cracked just clean it with warm water when needed.

I just had my GX detailed inside and out. I had the outside clayed, compounded, polished and waxed too. It's as smooth as glass. Nothing like a clean GX.
