Default Gx timing belt

I have a 2007 gx 470. We took it to superstition lexus to have the timing belt done. Service rep calls to tell me i have a small leak in the water pump and asks if i want to replace it. I get two prices from him. One price to do it now $450 and one to wait $1050. After i got off the phone with him i called a mechanic friend of mine. He was enraged that lexus would even quote a tb replacement without doing the water pump. Is this typical? Is this an upsale? No doubt water pump has a small internal leak that is wheaping, but should it have been packaged instead of them holding us hostage?

From my experience the w/p is always a given to replace. Your already there and its common sense to replace not much cost as far as parts but if it fails after you did the timing belt you would almost for sure have an engine failure. Was the advice you got from a new service adviser ? I would find another dealer

Lexus recommends changing the water pump at 180,000 miles when the 2nd new timing belt is installed. The water pump replacement is not part of the 90,000 mile service interval.

Especially if it's weeping now, you'll be going back to change it LONG before you need another timing belt, get it done. It's cheaper now as much of the labor overlaps, you'd have to remove the timing belt to change just the water pump.

I have an '08 GX 470 for which I am the second owner. During a routine oil change, my mechanic noticed my water pump had a fair amount of leakage. He thought it might be covered under a 60,000 mile warranty, and suggested I call the dealer. At the time, I had just over 60k miles. The dealer (Stevinson Lexus of Frederick) told me the water pump was covered under warranty up to 70,000 miles. I brought it in, and it was replaced at no charge. Very nice. Kudos to my mechanic (Justin, owns Auto Trends in Fort Collins) and the dealer.

Water pump is like oil filter, you should replace each time you have an oil change. Why would one take a chance not replacing the water pump since you only change timing belt every 90K miles? Common sense to replace it while you're at. Besides, water pump is not even that expensive to start with, roughly over one hundred dollars for brand new genuine Lexus part.

Same experience as icezin - leaky water pump noted at 46k mi and replaced under the powertrain warranty (7/70?). While they were doing the pump for free, I asked the stealership to put in a t-belt to the tune of ~$50 IIRC. It was way early on the belt, but next to free and pushed out my major service from 90k to 135k mi. Thank goodness not all stealerships are rotten apples. Hooray!

Just did my 90k timing belt, replaced belts, water pump, thermostat, radiator hoses, tensioner, etc. had to also replace radiator due to small leak (common problem on the GX) also spark plugs. $1770 for parts and labor.

That sounds like my 90k service, except I didn't do the rad hoses, and I have the spark plugs still to put in.

My mechanic said the replacement was exactly as the factory (didn't ask where he got it, suspect NAPA) cost around $330+ tax.

I got a quote to do the timing belt, water pump, thermostat, bearings and hoses for $950. Is this about right? We just hit 100K miles on ours so it is over due. Thx for the input.

That's about right and if that's Lexus quoting you that cost that's pretty good.

That's in-line with the cost at a Toyota dealer. Lexus about $500+ more.
