Default Lifter Noise

I have a 2004 GX470 with 41,000 miles its only when the engine is cold it will tick for a few mins. and then stop. Is there anything to be concerned about?

Your likely have a cracked exhaust manifold.
Fairly common on the 4.7 motor in GX's and four runners.
Not a big concern unless you need to have the exhaust system free of leaks to pass emissions testing.

If you're new to Toyotas, the 2uz-fe motor has noisy injectors too but since you said it goes away once it's warmed up it's probably a cracked manifold.

It's common on any 2uz-fe motor not just the 120 platform, IE: Tundra, Sequoia & LC too.

Here'a a quote of mine from an old thread on the matter...

It's normal. Common with this engine. Likely culprits are the fuel injector solenoids and or the common cold clearance noises from the valve train.

If it's a loud knocking as opposed to a ticking could be the fuel mixture, try a different gas or higher octane. If the engine abnormally vibrates when you hear this sound go see your SA.

Discussed more here... https://www.clublexus.com/forums/gx-...p-noise-2.html

Cracked manifold or leaking exhaust manifold gasket. I have it as well, and it goes away after approx 1 min of warm up. (gasket). This is on a 2004 GX with over 250k.

Have had it for years, 04 with 144,000 miles. Was just in stealership for rear suspension issues. They wanted to know if I wanted to replace exhaust manifold gaskets for 4 grand......yea right!

It is impossible to virtually diagnose the issue with certainty. It is possible it is a cracked and or leaking manifold, but it could also be the injectors and or cold piston slap. I suppose if it is a cracked manifold it would get louder under acceleration while the engine is still cold - might be one way to rule that out? A quick trip to the dealer or reputable indy can tell you pretty quick what it is.

You are not alone in your quest for an answer. The virtual diagnosis always seems to come back to the 3 possibilities mentioned in this thread. Although unlikely it is not impossible there is a clearance issue.

Are they gold plated and encrusted with diamonds used as heatsinks?? EDIT: Read gaskets.

Still, how can a SA even look at you with a straight face with a quote like that.

You aren't kidding!

The gaskets are under $100 so pretty much all of that cost is in labor. I know it's hard to get at the manifolds on our engine but $3900 in labor, that's down right insulting.

When I had my '06 Tundra DC I was thinking of going w/ DT headers/ My Toyota dealer, Joe Myers, quoted me a little less than $1000 in labor to install them, which wasn't bad considering all of the offroad shops in Houston that I called charged close to that too.

I believe they wanted to replace the entire manifold ie, they claim they are cracked at 700/ exhaust manifold, not happening anyhow, so you are only talking 2600 labor, that make you feel better, LOL. Just in case anyone in jersey needs to know, RT 10 Lexus. E.Hanover, NJ.

I guess they have to pay for their "iPad stations" and massage chairs somehow.
