I've wondered the same. Maybe a silicate spray on the outer casing of the column. I only have the issue when the truck has been sitting outside in the Houston heat. Will be trying a Teflon spray soon.

I got the steer column mostly apart enough to see the two mechanisms that move the steering wheel. There is a small thing metal piece that spins like a truck drive rod (which moves the unit down) and a thick piston type thing that pushes it out. I was able to spray some WD40 into/onto both. I think you need a liquid like that to reach the area with a nozzle straw. It seems to have worked so far.
