255/80R17 - Stock Wheels?
Thinking forward to a possible suspension replacement with 2" or so of lift, I'm trying to pick a tire size. I like the tiniest amount taller taller, one inch narrower tire than seems to be the most common choice for a lifted GX. I'm referring to 255/80R17 compared to the more popular 285/70R17. Obviously manufacturer tolerances may very, but the sizes should compare at 33.1" x 10.04" and 610 revolutions per mile vs. 32.7" x 11.2" and 617 RPM. Not only do I like the slightly narrower tire for streetability and just to be "different," I'm hoping there's a chance of keeping the stock wheels that came with my Sport Package GX. I like them and would rather throw my $$ at something else. Minor trimming is acceptable and probable removal of the running boards is in the plans. Anybody with experience or opinions?

I think that size tire looks sweet on the GX but there just doesnt seem to be that many tire options out there for that size. I know one or two users on this forum or on the 120 section of ih8mud that run that size tire, keep searching you should find some more info.
Either way, definitely lift it! Good luck, let us know what you decide on!

terrible tire choices in that size, and very expensive, some newer jeeps use a similar size though. they call them "pizza cutter" due to the thinness. if you need a replacement in a hurry (out on a trip somewhere) they likely wont have it in stock, something to consider. I wouldn't go thinner IMO stay 265 and just go taller like a 265/70 thats what alot of cars as well as the FJ cruiser uses. stock is a 265/65.
minor trimming is needed for the fender plastics above that size, and you dont have to remove running boars you can just round the corner off with a sharp knife, my 285/70/17 only caught on the very edge and then I cut that edge off and no problems now, since it was the inside edge and not the outside edge (the one you can see) you can't really even tell it was cut at all.
also the tire type makes a difference, some brand A/T are wider than others even in the same tire sizes.
