Been doing a lot of research on the used first gen GX470's and here's what I am finding.

1) They aren't that common. Lexus only sold 1 GX470 for every 4 RX's during that first gen and my feeling is (I don't have actual numbers on this) that ratio has only increased lately. Crossovers have taken over this space, for the most part.

2) When you do find them the mileage tends to be high and so does the price. One example among many: there's a local dealership with an 03 that has 167k miles. The outside is great but the inside has some wear showing on the seats and a badly cracked dash and they want $13,888. And they have no maintenance records so who knows what's been done to it!

2a) Higher mileage examples in my area (Atlanta Ga, market) are still going for right at 10k. 200k miles in decent shape around here is still a 10k retail vehicle.

3) People tend to drive these vehicles for a long time before trading them or selling them. Most folks seem to like them when they purchase them and then tend to stick with them for several years, at least, which ones again decreases how many are out there in the used market.

All that being said, I think if you can find a well maintained example at a reasonable price then a GX470 would make a very good purchase.

Thank you everyone for your comments & suggestions. I ended up buying the 2007 GX with 188,000 miles for $12,200. It does not have ML, GPS, rear entertainment system or backup camera. I know, I paid at least $2000 more but my wife's car (Accord) head gasket blew & I did not have much time to shop around.

If there's any consolation, the car is a single owner, well maintained & all the services were done at Lexus Dealership. He'd spent about $4000 a week back fixing whatever Lexus recommended. The pre-purchase inspection came out clean.& the ride quality is not bad.

I'm thinking of installing at least the backup camera & getting all weather floormat. Any recommendations?
