Backup Camera Options
Hey all. I have an 05 that has the ML system with Nav and BU cam. The camera works fine, but this morning I started down the rabbit hole of thinking about how I might try and make the BU image look sharper. This got me to thinking that there are three things working against me.
1) The ML system. Everything is integrated into that head unit, and it's only got so much computing power. If I were to send it a higher resolution image, would it even be able to decode it?
2) The LCD screen. Is this screen so antiquated that even if I sent it a superior image, would it look any better? It's pretty grainy -- maybe it'd only handle what the camera throws at it? On the other hand, it plays DVDs... Perhaps it's capable of handling 480p (though I think it dumbs down the res on the nav screen)?
3) Are there plug and play replacements for the camera HW? I'm guessing there are, but I have no clue. How hard of an install am I in for -- will I need to tear down the panel of the door to get at the camera?
I couldn't find much on the matter, but I think a better backup cam would be nice -- especially if it meant only buying a new camera... Has anyone tried this?
Gracias.

I don't have an MD so I have not actually tried what you're attempting, but I have installed this Alpine camera and it works absolutely great! I don't think you'll have problems with the resolution but you may need an interface module unless you're able to connect directly to the video part of the screen to trigger when you go into reverse.
