Transfer Case Interchange
Ok just found out my popping that I thought was coming from the front is the transfer case. So now I’m looking for a replacement because the dealer wants $4,000. My transmission guy told me he would switch it out for me for $350 all I need to do is locate one.
One of my questions is will a 4 runner transfer case work is I switch out the electronics with my GX?

GX transfer case
There are some used ones on car-part.com. A place in Minnesota has new ones for $3200 and used ones go for around $1500. I actually bought a 2004 V8 4runner transfer case to see what the difference is. On the GX the electric actuator only locks the front and rear together. On the 4runner the electric actuator locks the front and rear and also switches it from 4 high to four low. The GX has a manual lever for 4high and 4 low. I believe the 4runner case would bolt right in but the GX has no electrics to activate the 4low and 4high. My thought if I were to use a 4runner case is use the GX actuator on the 4runner case and figure out a way to leave it locked in 4high. I also got a v6 4runner or FJ cruiser case and they are shorter in width. The main drive chain is thinner. This causes problems when you try to bolt up the drive shafts. The rear driveshaft needs to be lengthened and the front has to be shorter. Probably could be done but some machine work would be required.
