I have a 2005 GX 470 with 168k miles. Anyone know if the rear suspension air bags are easy enough to DIY? Advice or tips for doing so? Dealership wants almost $800 to replace one bag.
I just had the coil springs replaced in my 2005 GX 470 by Meineke in Salt Lake City and they did a great job.
They removed the air bags and disconnected the air ride electrical and fuse.
The cost was $800 but the spring conversion kit was over $500.
It rides like a dream and no more blown air bags.
The rear air suspension should be a DIY job without much issue if you have a selection of basic tools. I've not actually done the full air suspension REPLACEMENT, but I did remove them and install the rear spring kit to eliminate the air suspension setup, so I know the process of removal and replacement.
If you want to eliminate the air bags, the spring kit is about $300 or a little more. IIRC, I used this one: https://www.arnottindustries.com/c-2...-cruiser-prado
It's a pretty simple DIY job. I'm a slow and meticulous DIY'er and spent about 3 hours doing mine (more than 2 hours on the first one, then less than an hour on the other one). I could probably do a 2nd GX in an hour now that I know what needs to be done.
You can order the conversion kit from Metal Tech #MT-GX 470-4000 for around $220
Keep in mind that coil springs must be compressed to install and can be very dangerous . You can lookup the conversion kits on line for other dealers. Like I said I had mine done at Meineke which is a shock and brake specialist in Salt lake City. My overall cost was around $850 with labor but that also gave me a warranty?

The springs don't have to be compressed to install on the rear of the GX. It's an easy install.
I thought I saw on the 460 anyways if you jack up the side your are working on disconnect the lower shock you can remove or replace the springs at will. Not sure if this is the same on the 470. About 90 seconds in....
Gx470 airbag repair w tube patch, hopefully this holds

I just bought a pair of Arnott replacement air springs through Rock Auto for a very reasonable price, and they look to be well made. I love the air suspension for towing trailers, and prefer to keep it as opposed to a spring conversion kit. I have not put them on yet, but will soon (my 2006 GX470 is not a daily driver). I jacked it up and put a 3 ton jack under the frame on each side just forward of the rear wheels. This plus removing the spare wheel gives you plenty of room to get at the air springs. Removing the top retention clips and the air fittings are a little tricky, but there are some good YouTube videos that show that. I hope to get mine done in the next few days, and will post some pics. Good luck if you choose to proceed!
