2005 GX470 - How long will it last

I had my 05 GX470 since 2005 when it was new. Love that car. For the past 12+ years, I changed oil and filter regularly every 5000-8000 miles. Engine stills run fine but I got the impression that it is not as punchy as when it was a few years back. Timing belt and water pump were changed at 90K miles. Experienced leak at the edge of the radiator at 120K miles (apparently common) and radiator was replaced. All fluids (power steering, front differential, rear differential, transfer case) were replaced at 80K miles and at 160K miles. Front CVs and rear shocks were replaced at 130K miles.
The vehicle now has 175K miles and probably ready for another timing belt and water pump change. I am debating if I should keep the vehicle much longer. If so, how many extra miles will I get out the vehicle if I continue to do regular oil/filter change?

Keep it and see how long it will last. Knowing the history of a vehicle is like peace of mind. Keep up on the maintenance and I would imagine you can more than double the miles you have now. Consider replacement of emission sensors, that could be what is taking away the zip in your trusty ride. Those sensors are ready to be replaced at the 10 year mark I believe.

Agree on O2 sensors aging out - it's something I'll likely do real soon.
Otherwise - lack of maintenance and rust are the likely hazards to a GX living a long life.

Thanks for the tips. So an aged but not failed O2 sensor can impact vehicle zippiness? How many O2 sensors are in the GX470? Is that a DIY job or something for the mechanic? Thanks

Two upstream, two downstream I believe. Yes it can be a DIY job, but they probably will not come out easily. You can rent a tool from a autozone or where ever. I would soak multiple times with Penetrating oil over a day and work on it the next.
yes, these sensors can/will effect performance.

Agree. There's a special socket you use to allow the wire to exit. They're like $8-10 on Amazon. Check the size of the bolt on the sensor before you order - but I'm pretty sure the GX uses the standard 7/8" / 22mm size.
They also sell a re-thread (tap) in case the threads get bunged up - use some Kroil or other penetrating oil to loosen it up the night before so that doesn't happen.

Should be just the upstream sensors that would affect performance and fuel economy, downstream are just there to monitor cat performance.

Doesnt the cost of all 4 sensors add up pretty high like $500-&600. I think one type costs $175 & the other type was $100. The cost is making me hold off in changing these @150k miles and I know I need to replace these soon. If you know of a good place to source these please share.

After those sensors, consider this, a friend of mine....a single mom, has a 2004 land cruiser.....405K...Other than the obvious replacement stuff, the only thing that once left her stranded was a fuel pump....her Toyota dealer loves her because she always shows up for scheduled maintenance. And it seems to be working for her. So don’t let a couple of O2 sensors stop you if you want to keep the truck.

Cost of the front ones are about $150 and $170, and they should be pretty easy to install. But, it sounds to me there's been a rush to diagnosis that the sensors even need to be replaced. OP said "...I got the impression that it is not as punchy as when it was a few years back" and the thread suddenly turned into replacing the O2 sensors. I suggest some more diagnosis, quantifying the "impression" that something's wrong with the vehicle, before replacing the sensors in a knee-jerk reaction to a vague impression. My brother had an LS 430 that used the same sensors and his originals were still working fine (still running like new, still getting the same great fuel mileage as it had all its life) when someone rear-ended the car and totaled it at 280K miles.

I agree 100% with I6turbo. How many tanks of fuel have you ran thru it? Do you use Premium fuel? Using non premium fuel can/will make the computer pull timing to guard against knock, that will also decrease performance.

Those sensors are history at that age and mileage. Not bad enough to set off an engine check light but certainly responsible for engine fuel/air management. If plugs are good and air filter clean it’s usually those sensors. They have an end life just like everything else.

Hell I bought my 05 GX with 175k lol. I have 215k now and on original sensors. Still idles and runs perfect and gets over 20mpg (if I baby it). What I would do is run a can of seafoam thru the gas tank and intake to clean the carbon out. Helps keep it peppy.

just think, if you changed sensors you might get 30 mpg
