Strange Brake Sound
Hey all, just bought my first car two months ago, a beautiful gold 03 GX. Threw out the old air suspension due to it failing and put in Arnott shocks and springs. Will soon do the timing belt as it is overdue. I am having an issue though. When the engine is cold the brakes make a weird rattle/vibration sound whenever I use them. The petal shakes and it makes this terrible metal on metal sounding rattle. The rotors themselves don't make noise, and have quite a ways before needing any replacement. Once the engine warms up then the sound goes away. What do you guys think this could be?

Alan553 knows his stuff, he has given me some great advice and help. Yes it could be the hardware, the rotors could be warped, I have seen cheap pads without shims do this, also if the pads produce a lot of dust, they might need to be cleaned and lubed, I learned from a very good mechanic not just the back of the pads need it, but all the hardware and the bolts that hold the calipers. Make sure all the surfaces are clean and get a good quality silicone base ant squeal. Wurth makes 1 thats about 40 bucks which will last you a lifetime and doesnt break down. Another thing inspect the inside pad also sometimes if not lubed properly the pads wear uneven.

Sounds like it’s ABS activation to me. No anti rattle clips will cause a noise, but you won’t feel it, just hear it. They’re supposed to have one on each side, I needed 2 per side to get mine to quiet down.

It also happens if i leave the car idling for longer than 10 minutes. It doesn't seem like it's the rotors or the pads, more like an internal brake/vacuum issue, reason being that It only happens when I pump the brake two or three times consecutively when I've started the car recently.

What's the brake fluid level like? How old is the fluid?

I no longer have the car but was repeatedly replacing the brakes rotors, brake pads and brakes themselves due to shaking when applying the brakes on my 2006 Lexus RX 350. Lexus was telling me that I was riding the brakes too hard and while I really liked the car, I ultimately I got rid of it due to expense and the hassle of having it repaired. I am once again seeking another car -- would love to get another Lexus. So i googled the issue, and discovered many, many others have experienced the same issue on this and other models and received the same reply. I am shocked to see that Lexus continues not to acknowledge and/or fix this issue. Wondering what can be done to light a fire under them?
