Years ago I purchased Michelins from Sam's and got the tires you spoke of and there was no difference between the tires, Unfortunately, I let my Sam's membership lapse after we moved out of town or I probably would have ordered from Sam's too.

Best in what? Grip (wet/dry), AT, tread wear, noise, etc. Hard to say what's best with all these metrics. I usually read reviews on Tirerack to see how tires are rated in the different areas.

I recently installed Nankang SP9 tires, $500 out the door at a local DT. Tires seem ok to me. I've had expensive Michelins and DT Cooper's, road-wise the Nankang's are fine, wear is TBD. The DT Cooper's wore down fast, and towards the end gave horrible tire noise.

lol. The previous owner had put a set of Nankangs on. I couldn't swap them for Michelins fast enough.
They rode hard, had a lot of tire noise, and not as much grip as I want.

Next set will probably be some KO2's. They'll have half the tread-life of the Michelins, but should have more grip in poor weather and better off-road.

Has anyone else heard of this?

I don't see the logic in Michelin creating an identical tire to be sold for a cheaper price instead of just selling the Defenders at the lower price - unless maybe there is a corporate price protection policy on the Defenders.
not sure the A/S is availabe in 265/65-17. arent you looking for the LTX MS?

Which model tire? I read many bad reviews on some Nankang models, but the SP9's got really good reviews. My SP9's ride great.

The X LT A/S does come in 265/65-17. According to Michelin, it is the same tire and the LTX MS.

Tire update. The Nankang SP9's I installed need replacing, tread low and tires got noisy (2yrs & 40kmi).
Installing Hankook Dynapro HT RH12 265/70's on Monday.

And I didn't even know about the "calibration --> tires" in nav screen. Suppose to do that with any tire change.

Thats a good pick at that price point! Never had a bad Hankook, and they are usually better than OEM on most makes. Thinking Dynapro XT for my truck next summer after the Falken AT3W's finally wear out.

690 otd for 4 installed, they price matched a Amazon seller thus saving me 30 per tire.

I won't have good wear & noise data until next year, but I can say for sure, 265/70-17 (~31-31.5", or similar 265/65-18, 255/60-19, 255/55-20) is the better tire size for the GX470.

Some other sizes may also be ok. (https://tiresize.com/chart/)
