Default Possible rear main seal leak

Hi folks,
I am currently investigating what might seem like a rear main seal leak on my 2006 GX470. The leak is not bad, a few drops a week but started to bother me. This morning I got the car jacked up and climbed under the body. Near the engine oil pan (and facing towards the front of the car), there is this black metal cover in the rear main seal area and appears the leaks are coming out of there. I snapped a photo while I was down there.

Can someone please advise me if this is normal (cover in the area), and does it happen to anyone else on a possible leak behind this cover?

Thanks so much!

Well, if there's a leak, that's where it'd show up.

A search here and on Google doesn't turn up anything about the GX470, but there are Tundra owners who have encountered it.

There's no need to pay Lexus labor rates for this - a Toyota dealer can do it, or a talented third party shop.

If there are drops on the ground overnight it’s probably been leaking for a while. This is something that will probably take a few years to get to the point of “needing” to be repaired. If the ground is dry underneath the vehicle I wouldn’t even worry about it.
Once youget a puddle overnight I’d get it repaired. I had an F150 that had a rear main leak at two years old and 50K miles. I sold it with 206K miles and the oil spot never was any bigger than a baseball. Still, it was an aggravation.

This could also be from a valve cover leak. Get under it and shine a light up towards top of the motor and see if the oil is running down from one of the valve covers. If it is coming from the covers, try to tighten the bolts on the cover. Don’t overtighten them. Sometimes they are so loose that you can turn them with your fingers.

Thanks guys, will try to shine light up and see if valve cover gaskets are the issues here. Also the leak is not bad, most of the week overnights are dry on the ground. I see a couple of drops maybe in a week...
