Default Shifting at LOW rpm's

Hi guys,

As I've been putting miles on my new to me 03 gx470 I noticed a major difference in shifting points compared to my 4runner.

I am wondering if there are any buttons or modes than can adjust this? The 4runner has ETC which seems to let the engine rev higher before shifting.

The GX is hard to get any grunt out of when stepping on the pedal as it shifts at such low RPMs (under 3K).

When i manually select gears i can increase the RPMs.. so i know they exist!

thanks!

No choices other than manually shifting

Luxury car, so shift points are lower so they're smoother.

Key word for me here is "new to me".
I dont know how long you have been driving it or if the previous owner likes to "baby" it.(if you just bought it)
If you drive your GX long enough like your 4Runn (what year), it will learn your habits.
If you are aggressive with the throttle, it will soon learn to hold it at higher rpm's.

I'm quoting this straight from the repair manual of my GX470

SYSTEM DESCRIPTION 1. SYSTEM DESCRIPTION (a) The ECT (Electronic controlled automatic transmission) is an automatic transmission that electronically controls shift timing using the ECM. The ECM detects electrical signals that indicate engine and driving conditions, and controls the shift point, based on driver habits and road conditions. As a result, fuel efficiency and power transmission performance are improved. Shift shock has been reduced by controlling the engine and transmission simultaneously. In addition, the ECT has features such as follows: Diagnostic function. Fail−safe function when a malfunction occurs.

Don’t understand how that works...hold the pedal down and the throttle open and it stays in gear until you let up or it reaches redline....what is the ECU learning?
