Default 2009 GX470 Radio Trouble

i have tried searching but can’t aeem to find a similar issue. My 2009 GX470 radio has gremlins. For several years the controls on the headunit have intermittently and briefly stopped working. Recently the sound (in ALL modes) has begun to ‘stutter’. Sound almost like power is turning on and off rapidly. I went into diagnostic mode and all appears normal. Have also had intermittent loss of rear camera in reverse (no black screen just not switching into camera mode when in reverse). The stuttering corrected itself for a few days but is back. I removed trim and entertainment unit to check connections but everything is appropriate.

questions

Has anyone had a similar experience?
head unit vs. amp?
should I start with replacing head unit (used ~$175)?

i would rather avoid the stealership as this will likely be a $1000+ repair.

Thoughts?

I wish mine would go bad so I could justify changing it to the new android 'tesla' screen units.I definitely get this:

Trying not to put much money in a 10 year old truck. Standard radio is good for wife (with aux cord). I just picked up a used Head Unit for $125 on Ebay from LKQ. Rolling the dice that this is the issue. Will update after install...

OK - replaced head unit and same issues as before. The following symptoms are present:
  1. All audio sources (am/FM/Aux) 'stutter' rapidly as if amp is turning on and off several times/second.
  2. Backup camera works intermittently (less than 20% of the time).
  3. Diagnostic mode entered and all items originally show 'OK' in System Check Mode but Lan monitor displayed multiple errors.
  4. After clearing codes, the only error that came back was 'Camera-C NRES' after rechecking.

Does anyone have any ideas?

I think I figured it out...

I called United Radio in NY and asked to speak with the technician who repairs the ML Amp (I thought that was the issue). I described my issue as a 'stuttering' of the audio on ALL SOURCES (much like a CD skipping). He said it was being caused by the RSES (DVD Player) in the roof emitting an 'on and off mute condition' (rapidly). He mentioned that I would simply need to disconnect the RSES in the roof (not a problem as my children are grown) and the issue would be solved. After being unable to determine how to removed the RSES to access the wiring, I may have 'bumped' it with my fist a few times (maybe on purpose!). Suddenly the radio started working.

Does anyone know how to remove the RSES to access the connecting harness? I have searched on here and youtube but no luck.

Please advise.

amp is turning on and off several times/second.
Mine does this once a week , not as fast as yours , throbbing with sound kind of thing
I stop , turn motor off and back on , fixes it til next time

Thanks MrJason!. I couldn't determine how to get the cover/bezel off and didn't want to break it. I will accomplish this Saturday morning.

Mr. Jason

Just got around to taking care of this issue. I delayed because it magically started working for a week or so after your message. There clearly is an issue with the RSES creating this 'rapid on/off mute condition'. The issue appears to be fixed (hopefully for good) with the disconnect of the RSES wiring.

On a side note, the bezel around my system has a different fixation (2009). I am fairly certain it is OEM as I bought the truck new in 2009. It actually has integrated lights in the bezel. There are 4 light blue 'push in' trim connectors near the four corners PLUS a 10mm screw under the light lense in the middle on each side.

Just thought I would share for any others that need to remove the RSES.

Best - joe

My '09 with ML and Nav has this issue recently. Radio and Aux sources are affected. Phone calls through my bluetooth connection is fine.

never replaced. Is that the source of the problem? Where is the AV power relay located?

In the engine bay relay/fuse box. The "ACC Cut" relay controls power to the A/V system.

I recommend to swap out the C/OPN relay too, that's the fuel pump. Also the MG CLT, that's the mag clutch on AC compressor.

With a 10-15 yr old GX, I recommend swapping out all the relays. They simply wear out, and at this age they are on edge of causing intermittent issues, and sometimes just go complete fail.

The wiring diagrams are posted in the sticky section of this GX sub forum.
