Unhappy 2008 GX470 Power Steering Leak

I have a leak somewhere in my Power Steering system. I have to put fluid in about every 3-5 days. There is not a drop of oil on my garage floor, and this issue has been going on for several weeks. Where does the fluid go? Any experience out there with a similar issue. Dealership wants $1800 to replace hoses, pump, etc. Anybody had this done before? I'm a DIY mechanic with limited skills, and not sure I want to tackle a problem this big.

I did flush the system with new Dexron III fluid and that doesn't seem to help (YOUTUBE video indicated this might cure the leak).

Thanks ahead of time. New user to this forum.

There are rubber bellows at each end of the steering rack. More than likely one or both of them is swelling with fluid...

I've never swapped one before. Sorry.

I had the exact same issue, and it was a bad air inlet valve on the power steering pump. Bought the part online for $75 and replaced it myself.

Actually, it was an “air control valve”. Have you noticed any white smoke from your exhaust?

Yes, I have. I was wondering where that was coming from.

I found a video online that dissected this valve and explained what happens when it fails. I'm convinced this is my problem. And to think the dealership wanted to charge me $1800 to repair. What a rip-off.... Thanks so much for responding to my post. I really hope other Lexus owners use this site and follow this thread if they have a similar problem.

Sincerely, Chris.

I am glad to help. I had the same issue and a local mechanic thought it was a leak in my steering rack. After that did not fix the issue, they had no clue. I had to research the issue on my own and I found videos online pointing to the air intake valve. Fortunately, it is a simple fix.

I'm happy to report my issue is resolved. Local mechanic replace Air Control Valve, on my suggestion, and no more leaks!

I agree with others. Your sucking up powers steering fluid through the vacuum line connected to the pump.
