New wheels!
Old wheels
New wheels
I finally got tired of looking at the peeling paint on my OEM wheels from 2004. And, I was afraid that the corrosion might get into the beads, possibly having me lose air when it was not convenient.
I had an extra set of 18" gx460 wheels in the shed for my newer GX and also used set of 275 65 r18 Michelin LTXs off another truck, so I had em mounted and balanced today.
I think it turned out ok. My speedo is off now about 5% per gps with the slightly larger wheel / tire setup, but I can deal with that.
No rubbing or other wierd stuff with that tire size so far.
Not a bad looking ride for 240,000+ miles!
My goal is 300k before I part with it. Mostly I don't want to do the belt / water pump service for the third time.

Yeah, the larger 18 inch GX rims give the SUV an appealing look with a slightly more aggresive stance. Your newer rim design is easier to clean also. Looks sweet! 👍
While Lexus' body paint/clearcoat usually holds up well after many years, occasionally the powder coated rims may need refurbishing after being exposed to years of harsh elements (snow/salt, mud/gravel).
Like yours, my 04 GX470 with 300K miles is also a testimony to Lexus' factory paint/clearcoat holding up well -

I have not powder coated Lexus wheels in the past, but in prior experience with refinishing anything, durability and finish is always dependent on quality of prep and quality of materials used to do the job
i just had a set of new wheels. Bought em cheap off of Craigslist, new take offs. I called around for refinishing and powder coating quotes on my old wheels and it can be done right, but cost was more than a set of new wheels. Or at least what I paid anyway for the takeoffs.
At some point this winter I'll be bored and will try to clean up my old ones and refinish with proper prep, primer, paint, and clear, and I bet with that they will be just fine as an extra set for the remaining life of the truck.

Powder coating can make you wheels look better then new! I had some bad acid stained wheels on my Lincoln MKZ that I bought CPO last year they were a two toned cut finish with gray inserts in the middle. So I had them completely powder coated High Gloss Black and they look 10 times better then the factory finish!!

GX470 by Lexus is a all-out winner in terms of mechanical and materials used.
My 2006 is at 224k miles now, no real signs of engine trouble, just some minor periphery things.
As for wheels, the powder coat option is a viable way to refurb them. And for those who have chrome things on the GX, chroming the OEM wheels is an option too.
