Default Wheel Bearing repair cost. Am I missing something?

I've seen people here tell me they are getting quotes from mechanics of anywhere between $700 and $1,200 to replace one front wheel bearing and hub assembly. I personally got a quote for $1,100 from a mechanic ($550 parts and $550 labor). I also got two quotes for $350 ($250 for parts and $100 for labor). Not that I want to pay more, but should I be concerned? I've seen DIY posts that say it's a 45 minute job. Why are quotes so high and again, should a low quote scare me? BTW, my parts quotes are for OEM parts.

I think I paid about $600 from a private mechanic, using OEM parts.

Replace how? Press out/in a new bearing, or just swap the bearing assembly with a new one?

This item is like using concrete over pavers if you do the press in way, the part is less $$ but labor is more. The whole assemble is a more expensive part but the labor is less.

Sometimes you just find every local shop is just way over-priced, thus giving you no options. Check out a few towns over, maybe another shop out there is less $$$, and you just have to go enjoy the scenery for ~2-3hrs while they do the work.

He ended up doing both front. $650 out the door.

Default Front bearings

It is not a simple job to replace the bearings, and it is not easy at the same time. It is a possible DIY if you have tools and the time.

i have done it both ways, pressing new bearings into old hubs and also have purchased complete hub assemblies with everything pressed together.

Honestly, I think it is easier and faster to just get a complete hub assembly and install it, even though I have a shop press.

Last time I ordered bearings from bluepit and was very satisfied with the quality, warranty, and shipping.

650 out the door for both sides is not a bad price though IMO. Hub assembly from them is 239 each at this time.
