Default Any have experience with a refurbished ABS pump?

I believe that the ABS pump has failed on my sons 2004 GX. I’m wondering if anyone here has experience, good or bad, having a refurbished unit installed.

It’s $2300 for a new unit,$1150 for a rebuilt one. Since the rig has 312,000 miles it’s hard to imagine spending the extra for new, but I will if I have to. I will of course have my trusted shop verify that is the problem.

I went ahead and rolled the dice with a rebuilt unit.

I will post the results when it gets done, hopefully this week. $650 for a rebuilt unit, and I will get $150 back when I send in my old one. The guy says he has rebuilt 400 of these so I’m hoping for the best. Wife and I decided that at 312,000 miles, it just didn’t make sense to spend $2300-3000 on a brand new unit.

Shop labor will be $500 for the install and bleeding of the brakes.

The unit I received works perfectly. Shop was able to install and bleed the system. It ended up being $613 out the door for the diagnosis, install, and bleeding. Saved a ton of money, hopefully it holds up as well as I’m told it will.

What led you to think it was failing? What were the symptoms? How does it feel how that you replaced it? Thanks.

It happened while my 17 year old son was driving it. He called me to tell me that the BRAKE light , ABS, VSC lights all came on, and an alarm noise was buzzing. Thankfully he knew to stop the rig and call me before proceeding.

By the time I arrived to pick him up all of the warning lights were off. I drove it home (it was only a 2 mile drive home) and noticed that I could hear a constant vacuum like noise coming from the ABS unit area. The shop told me that is the unit working to create pressure for the brake assist.

The brake feel Definitely feels much better than it did before. My wife (who also drives a GX470) and son both had been complaining for about a year that “something is wrong with the brakes”, that the system was weak. The pads all checked out fine, and though the brakes were a bit weaker than my wife’s 2008 GX, I Chalked it up to the 2004 having 312,000 miles and just being old lol.

The shop ran the codes to confirm what I already thought-that the ABS unit had failed.
