Default Might be the new owner of a 2008 GX tomorrow

First time poster and recently registered, but have been browsing the forums for a while. Great community here!

It seems the price of GXs has gone up considerably the past year. I'm seeing cars from fair to excellent condition, from 2004-2008 with 160K miles and up go for 12K to 16K here in California. I'm looking at a 2008 in fantastic condition inside and out for $13995 with 209K miles. Timing belt/water pump was completd at 180k and has brand new Goodyear Wrangler tires. PPI by a mechanic is being done as I type this.

Am I crazy to pay this much!? The car has full maintenance records and most of the work has been done by a Lexus dealer. I plan to use this car for my adventure vehicle so won't be putting many miles on it.

What are you guys seeing for GX prices in your area?

Prices are going up because we just can't travel by air anywhere yet. I think even after the restrictions are lifted, there will be a new group of folks who have discovered/rediscovered the love of getting outdoors and into the wild. That being said, I don't think prices are going to be coming down anytime soon. If you want a great truck, be patient and wait for that Unicorn. I did that with my 4Runner and it took 3 months to get the right one. If you want to get out and do some mods and be ready for this spring, then jump in and get this truck. I have never looked backwards and regretted any purchase, just enjoy what you have and make it yours, through mods, stickers, add-ons etc..
Welcome to the group.

I think i'm going to jump on this one. It's the fourth one I've looked at the past two weeks and in the best shape of all of them even though it's got the highest miles. The inspection came back rather clean. The biggest items being needing new control arm bushings in both fronts and an alignment. 1000 bucks, no big deal. I will try to negotiated the price down a bit with the dealer.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I took the plunge! I was a bit nervous buying a car with over 200K miles, but this thing has been impeccably serviced by a lexus dealer. It also came with a brand new set of Goodyear Wrangler Duratracs.

Things I'm planning on doing soon:
  • Fluid flush - brakes, steering, possibly transfer case?
  • Mechanic inspection revealed some small tears on the front control arm bushings. Going to take it to my buddy who is a mechanic and see if it's something that really needs to be replaced.
  • The stereo has a ****ty buzz coming from the right side door. I think it's the midrange speaker but not totally sure yet. I know this is a common problem. Wondering if I should just order all new speakers for both doors.

You might want to look into upgrading the control arms rather than rebuild yours.
If the cost equals out, might as well get a quality aftermarket replacement with all new components.

Would you recommend OEM control arms or something aftermarket? The quote i got to replace 4 bushings was 50 dollars per bushing ($200) and $600 of labor, which equates to 4.5 hours.

Doing a quick search I found some OEM control arms for about $250 each. Is it less labor to just replace the entire LCAs?
