Is this Rust repair too bad to buy?
06 GX470 with 144K miles for $13.5K
Included is before and after shots of this guys rust repair.
Carfax shows he got it a year ago from auction from Michigan. One owner prior that has good service records.
He says he spent a few days cleaning the bottom out with Pneumatic descaler and grinder etc. Then applied marine grade rust convert coating. Said all the rust flaked off and nothing serious. He's a pastor and a family man.
Pros: He installed EMU 3in Lift, UCA's, new wheels and tires, Touch screen and roof rack, plus new Timingbelt and WB.
Looks like a great buy and he was up front about the rust issues and even sent over before pics, which I appreciated.
Im planning to do alot of remote camping, driving down 4x4 roads, and the rust scares me tho.
Would love to hear peoples opinion.

It looks like he did a moderate job of cleaning the rust. The job appears to only hit the exposed and obvious areas. Those areas he did hit are ok, but not great, there is still a lot of scaling and roughness under that sealant. Using a scaling tool is only the first step, some sanding and prep is needed, and I am pretty sure that was skipped. Did he use a product that converts the rust, or just covers and seals? I would take off the skid plates and take a close look under there and see if the job was halfway thorough.
I would be concerned about the area I highlighted on the photo, looks pretty deep and cannot be repaired with just scaling and sealant.
If you are just going to use this as an overlanding platform, and plan on wrenching on it, it could be a good project. The price needs to reflect that.

Thanks for Responding! Over the past couple weeks I talked him down to $12K.
Looks like he put about $6-7K in parts on it so doesn't seem like a bad price, not looking for something Ill have to fix a lot of stuff on though!
But again I dont want something snapping on me, or the rust to keep eating at the frame over time.
He did say it was a Marine Rust Coverter and he seems like an honest man.

Way too much rust for my liking working on that vehicle would be a headache. Maybe good if you keep it for 2 years then sell.

Think you just answered yourself. I don't care at all for the circled spot that was pointed out.
Get a repair quote from a body shop and get that price down if your sold on it. Remember its not the only one out there. It better have the timing belt and water pump done to even consider as well,

You guys painting over the rust is making it worse. The rust will only expand. Your best way to handle the rust issue is to sand, chip away and remove as much of the rust as possible then spray it down with fluid film.

Yes most looks like it has just been covered. I had a four runner that I banged with a hammer slightly to remove bubbling rust, wire brushed and sanded as much as I could then used fluid film. some of those areas I would definitely weld in patches where they are separating. With a little work I would be confident in keeping it for years.
