LX 470 and GX 470
#17
Some clarifications:
1. GX is based on Land Cruiser Prado; LX is based on LC100. Totally independent design.
2. Neither one is based on the Tundra/Sequoia platform...both were designed by and for US market.
3. LX has the strongest body-on-frame on the planet...it was Toyota's no-cost effort to build the strongest frame in 1998.
In off-roading, i would definitely favor the LX/LC over the GX/4runner. It's suspension travel is the BEST OF ALL SUVS/TRUCKS with independent front suspension. It is even better than Jeep's Grand Cherokee! It is better than GX/4runner by a significant amount (according to FourWheeler Magazine). The torsion bar front IFS is somewhat old-tech, but very effective in off-roading.
Despite somewhat smaller disc brakes, the '03 LX outbraked the GX in all reviews i have seen so far. This could be attributed to the LX's 275-width tire...more tire contact.
In terms of wind noise, the LX is the quietest SUV on the planet. It's noise level is the same as the previous LS400.
Interior quality is better in the LX...but not much better. In the LX, the door is all soft.
The GX does have a superior (at least, in design) center differential (Torsen)...but the GX does have the vibration problem. In addition, the audio/visual stuff in GX is better.
So, from all of above, the LX is more expensive...justifiable. The GX is a great value (relatively) in it's class. The LX is also in it's class.
