Upgrading to GX470 from 05' RX330
Hello all...I would like to hear some opinions on upgrading from an 05 RX330 to a CPO 04 or 05 GX470.
Is it worth the money and does anyone have any idea of how much more i would have to shell out for an 04' or 05' GX with similar mileage as my RX330.
I only have about 11.5k miles on my RX.
Basically I need more power and room for an upcoming new addition to the family. The RX just isnt enough of an SUV for me. Its either gonna be upgrade to the GX or wait for the new X5. Any help would be nice. Thanks

GX has more power and you sit higher/ see better on the road but I think shoulder room in 2nd row is close to RX. I had a RX loaner from the dealer and it did not seem that much smaller in 2nd row - you can check dimensions on Lexus website. The V8 alone is worth it althought power is less than the new X5 V8....I thought about the X5 but my daily drive is a BMW 330i - great car but not as reliable as a Lexus- if you need it for your family/kids get the GX ...

Hi
I have an RX300 and a GX470 and offer the following observations:
1) The GX does have more room, and a 3rd row seat (option). The 3rd row is small, but it works for small kids, or even teenagers for short trips around town. My 17 year old will ride there on a longer trip - he takes a pillow and lies across the seat, sleeps, etc. I don't think you could use a child seat in the 3rd row, but would be fine in the 2nd row. The GX has more shoulder and hip room and a general feeling of a more spacious cabin.
2) The GX has the V8 and more power, but it also weighs more, and it's not that much quicker for acceleration than the RX. The extra torque for the V8is very evident for heavier loads or towing.
3) Both are good in the snow, quiet, fun to drive but not sporty for handling
4) The GX gets about 3 MPG less than the RX, city or highway, based on my driving style (I don't have a heavy foot).
5) If you go to Kelley Blue Book (kbb.com) you can look up 'book values' for the various models, years, miles, and condition. It is a good guide, but you might expect differences depending on where you live and the local market.
I like both cars a lot - if I had to choose one, it would be the GX for the extra room, and power, just like you said.
Good luck
Bob

GX time
I had an 04 GX and was very happy with it. When I moved back to the mainland, I went back to a RX (I had one in 99) thinking I didn't need the extra room anymore. The RX just didn't feel as comfortable as my GX. I sold the 05 RX after about 6 months and ordered a new GX.. I think you'll find the GX to be much more of a solid ride

Not much in my opinion.

There is a ton more useable/shoulder room in the GX than the RX. I guess I am not sure of where you are going with your argument?

I agree, went from an RX to GX and there is a lot more room in the GX, the 3rd row seat is much more usable and has much more room left when the seats are in use. V8 is way nice and I love the styling of the GX. The only issue with a GX vs RX is that the GX is still pretty much as it was in 03 where the RX has been redesigned and has all the latest greatest high tech goodies that are not yet available on the GX, so you give up a little of that stuff.

Thanks all for the great replies...I am now convinced that I must upgrade to something at least a little bigger in size and power. Is there gonna be a new GX model sooner or later?

I have the 06GX470 and the 07RX350.
Both are nice, but the GX is much more solid and comfortable for long trips and any kind of rough terrain or off road. It has more room (although my husband claims there is more passenger seat leg room in the RX - I drive most of the time in both vehicles so couldn't really say). With the third row of seats out, you can stow a lot more and bigger stuff in the GX, too.
The GX has more powerful acceleration, but the RX is peppy enough and has better control around turns. The RX is obviously better for the tight turns and small parking space situations.
I actually don't think of my RX so much as an SUV but as a taller AWD hatchback. The GX has the capabilities of a real SUV.
