16 inch wheels
I'm new to the forum and new to the GX. I have a 2007 and so far I love it (I've had just about everything from International Harvester Scouts to Land rovers, with Chev's and Fords in between). Proud to say I've gotten almost everyone of my trucks stuck at one time or another.
I'd like to get a spare set of wheels and tires for the GX to use for "off road". I'd like use some 16inch 4runner rims and go with a higher profile tire than the 17inch OEM.
I've searched the forum and seen a lot of discussions on rims 17inch and larger. I've even seen a comment that says "17inch or larger 4runner wheels work". Is there a limitation to going with 16inch rims? Are the GX brake rotors and calipers an issue with the smaller rim?
Anyone have any experience with 16's on the GX?
Thanks for any info or advice.
Todd, Minneapolis

mmm... Good quesiton. I see a ton of 16 inch rims on e-bay and they claim to be for 2003-2008 4runners, but I'm not certain.
I like a little more tire height while off road and the 265/75 16 tires are usually cheaper than their 265/70 17 counter part.
I'll try to chase down the last year the 4runner came from the factory with 16's.

I found this thread in the archives. There is some speculation about the brake calipers needing the larger 17in rim.

IIRC, the Sport and Limited 4runners have bigger brakes than the other 4runners, which requires the 17" wheels.
And I should have added: we have the same brakes as the 4runner sport+limited

I was just out in the garage looking at the front rotors on GX with stock wheels. It is pretty tight in there between rotor and rim. I think 16 might be a little too tight. 17's seem to be the right answer.
Thanks for the help guys and nice meeting you.
