Is he in the Phoenix metro area? If so - and if you're willing to share his info - I'd LOVE to give this guy a call when it's time for servicing my GX.

I have a fully loaded 4Runner Limited and GX470 so here is my opinion (even though I am a few days too late). The 4Runner is quicker and handles better than the GX w/o KDSS. I like the looks of my 4Runners exterior better (personal preference). The interior is another story- IMO this is what Lexus does best. The wood in the GX is nice and materials are top notch. Layout is also better. With regards to reliability, my 4Runner wins.

GX with 72K: water pump failed at 70K, 3 sets of ride height sensors replaced, 2 speakers blown
4Runner with 96K: rear diff seal failed at 91k.

When I had my 4R Limited, the CV boot leaked and one of the sensor went bad behind the center console along with the LCD light bulb going out.

Acceleration was nominal difference. They'd be pretty damn even, but who races SUVs anyways. Yes, the little luxury features absolutely the GX annihilates. Windshield wiper auto. Thicker glass everywhere. Auto down all windows. Front windshield defrost. Better electronics controls. Reclining rear seats. Suspension comfort settings. Height control. Gripping wood grain. Integrated key fob. Better looking engine bay (more covered cuz the 2UZFE is not pretty).

Here are my two cents. We have an '03 GX with 104k and recently acquired from a relative an '07 4Runner Sport with only 29k. Each has its own pluses and minuses. The 4R is only a V6, though I really wouldn't tow with it anyway. It gets better mileage but the creature comforts in the GX, even though it's 9 years old now, are much better. I like that the 4R is slung lower to the ground, which makes getting the skis and snowboards off the roof a bit easier. I also like the rolldown back window (very handy for loading in groceries). But without a third row (none available on the 4R Sport), the GX is simply more functional with three boys.

While similar in a lot of ways on paper, the GX and the 4Runner are just two really different kinds of animals. After much hemming and hawing, we're probably going to sell the 4Runner this month since we don't have another bay in the garage to keep it in. PM if interested!
