GX 2006 Cold Air Intake (CAI)
Hi All,
First post, new owner of a 2006 GX 470. I'm coming up with my wish list and a cold air intake would probably be first on my list. I was wondering if I could get some feedback on some CAIs used and your experiences with them.
One thing I noticed by visiting K&N and Volant is that the sites don't show a fitting for the GX. I see them for the 4Runner. Will 4Runner configs work?
Let me know...

This? Says it's not compatible with the 06 GX470 but I gather cause it's not listed for the GX 470?

Just to let you know K&N CAI fitted on a GX by Supercharged. He gave us the inspiration to many GX members to go this way. Soon many members followed. And you are here !!.

We also have a 2006 4Runner V8, and I am looking at either buying one of these intakes and/or creating my own. Still have some miles to go before I come to a decision.

Hate to harsh the buzz here, but I think it's valuable to share critique.
Back in the 80s and 90s as manufacturers were ramping up horsepower, efficiency and technology, there were occasionally gains to be made by messing with factory intake systems. I used to do it all the time on my cars. GTIs, Miatas, crx, civic, e36 m3, etc. The gains were minor, but the sound was the real payoff.
Over time, though, manufacturers got smarter about intake systems, and they cared about efficiency and horsepower. So, they made intake systems with both good flow and filtration. And, they also realized that pulling in cold air was far preferable to pulling in air from the engine bay.
Today, most cars benefit little from swapping out the intake. Installing a "CAI" if you will. In fact, if you factor in the filtration concerns of the oiled gauze filters (pleated paper is demonstrably better), the risk of fouling the MAF if you mis-oil, and the likelihood that you're actually making the intake system less efficient (loss of cold air, loss of heimholz resonators, etc.), the equation really comes out in favor of the factory systems 9 times out of 10. Leaving you with a placebo effect amplified by the additional intake noise.
The odds of fuel economy or power being increased on the gx w/one of these systems is quite low. The odds of hurting both are higher than the odds of helping, IMO.
Again, just my opinion based on a ton of tuning and research over the years. YMMV. Happy modding.

I understand. I got a little kick from my last intake in my Lexus RX. Keeping the filter clean was not so hard. Glad I did the mod on that snail. But the exhaust was the biggest inhibitor where hp was concerned. Once I got rid of the HUGE resonator and rear muffler and replaced them along with the intake I was allot louder, but had some power I enjoyed. No super charger mind you.
Every car has it's own ups and downs. Intakes can really improve hp for some and not for others. But every intake I have had on every car I have owned after 2006 has benefited torque wise. I dunno about mpg as I never did the work to find out.
I remember I had a Scion xA. When I first bought it I was trying to get onto the ramp. No speed. I put my fut all the way to the floor and still nothing. Intake helped. Header helped and last the Tanabe exhaust helped. Each a bit more. So yeah the intake (unless some one with real life experience WITH the GX shares differently) might not be 14hp gain (I highly doubt it 100% it's like 4-5 maybe). But Still never regretted the extra torque from a short ram.
Anyone able to confirm having this one on their GX and what god or bad has come of it? I know we have a poster here already by mann777. Tell us a bit?
PS: how anyone expects truly significant hp upgrades spending $200-$400 is really unrealistic. Turbo Toyota kit would be well into $4-6K+ range. Superchargers the same.
