Default Purchasing a 2007 GX - what to look for

Hi - I am in the process of purchasing an 07 with 70k miles from a reputable Lexus dealer. I test drove it and thought I felt a little of the 'clunk' issue, but may have been imagining it because I had read so much about it. Were the 07s subject to the issue and TSB? If so, I assume I should ask the dealer if this car has been fixed?

Any other key areas I should be focusing on as I check the car out? Is it possible to buy a warranty from the dealer on a car like this?

Thanks for any help - I searched for an existing thread on this topic but did not find anything.

I loved my 2006 and this was the first time I ever held on to a truck for 9 yrs. I did have the "Clunk" fixed while under warranty no questions asked at 5000 miles. You can ask Lexus to show you the service records of the truck and it will be noted if this was replace.

Check the rims. I had a major problem with the corrosion problem that many are having. There has been a problem for several years of the rim finishing failing. I had after a long fight mine replaced at 25,000 miles. I had an Alternator fail at 22,000 miles.

As for warranty. I purchased and had used the extended warranty at my dealership from Costco. If you are a member you can purchase an extended warranty I believe up to the 10 yr mark not sure it may be 75,000 mile mark. I purchased the extended warranty at the end of my 4 yr manufacturer mark through Lexus but only for 3 yrs as I did not think I would keep the truck that long. When I decided to keep it beyond the 7 yr mark I purchased a new 4yr warranty through Costco. We were very happy with it.

Thanks - that is very helpful. I will ask for the full service records. I'm pretty green at buying used cars. Since it is at a Lexus dealer, should I pay them to perform an inspection, or are they too conflicted? It will be a bit of a pain to have to schlep it to another dealer or shop to have it inspected.

Also, I went back out to the dealer this morning and did a closer visual inspection. There is very little to no rust in the wheel wells, but there is rust if you look under the car from the front. And there are some bolts missing that attach the front bumper cover to the pan behind it - they are sort of like struts. I'm wondering it it had some front end damage. I will try and post pictures.

To give you an idea. I had a 2006 loaded with 70,000 in mint condition. I traded it in and got 15,000 it never hit the retail market as it was bought by one of the salesmen, I later come to find out. Don't know what price they are asking for the one your looking at, I'm just giving you a reference. I could have gotten more if I sold it privately but I didn't want the headache.

As for the other items I'm sure one of the guys will be around to answer your concerns in more detail.

Some surface rust is expected underneath on areas pictured but I would avoid if there's heavy corrosion. Dealer should be able to replace some missing screws/pushpins.

Those pushpins get left off by the oil-change techs all the time. Just buy a bag of them off Amazon.

So I asked about the TSB for the clunk and they said the fix had never been performed on this truck. They have agreed to perform it prior to purchase, no charge. However, none of the other TSBs mentioned by JASP615 seem to have been performed. It appears that the vehicle was serviced very regularly up to 45k with no real issues, but the the record trail sort of disappears. The Lexus dealer I am purchasing from has done an inspection, and the only item of note was that "Steering Gear Box/Linkage and Boots/Ball Joints/Dust Covers" was checked off as May Need Future Attention. All in all, I have not found any clear red flags, only a few yellow ones, and a disappointing gap in records. The truck seems to be in good shape except for some rust. Within the next 20k I will need to do the extended maintenance, but I can budget for that.

Thanks for the guidance and info. If there are any glaring errors in my thought process, please let me know.

Is that amount of rust normal out east? I just bought a 2007 GX470 with 119K miles that has absolutely no rust, not one spot, underneath. It's been in California, so I'm sure that helps, but that rust would concern me. Also, another thing to check (that I forgot to check) is the CD player. Mine doesn't work. I've read that it's pretty common. The nice thing about the 2007 is that you can just add a bluetooth receiver that plugs into the aux. in and have bluetooth audio to go along with the built-in bluetooth phone. After a few months of ownership I can't praise the vehicle enough. Mine does have a driveline thunk (although it has gotten better, far less frequent. No idea why) but there just isn't another vehicle that I know of with its combination of capabilities, reliability and comfort for even close to the price. I paid about 14500 for mine (one owner, excellent maintenance) and couldn't be happier.

It's not excessive for a NY vehicle. I have a 2003 RX that has a similar amount and it has been garage parked it's whole life. It still bugs me a bit so I may spend some spare time brushing the GX rust and treating it. Or maybe I'll watch some football.
