Default Rear Wheel Bearing '06 GX470

Hi all. I did a search but nothing came up. I"m looking for info on replacing rear wheel bearings on my GX470. Any info would help. I took it to a mechanic and he said take it to a dealer. I really don't want to do that. I've searched the internet but haven't found alot of info on this job. Thanks for you help.

This should be the same for your truck.

If anything this would be closer to the GX than the Tundra.

So, my sad story so far:

Found a "reputable shop" to press out and press in my new rear axle bearings and waited two weeks for them to have time to do it.

Finally, picked them up yesterday and got as far as installing the new axle seals, slide in the axles and noticed the washer was in-between the collar and the retainer clip.
After many expletives and confirming with parts diagrams and the above helpful video, i called the shop, which is closed for the weekend, left a message and also sent an email.
If they are actually a "reputable shop", I hope they will be in touch soon and offer to make this right asap.

Questions to the collective: can the new parts still be reused if they've been pressed? Are the new bearings and collars now considered "need to be replaced?"

Sigh.

It's possible to remove the hub without destroying the bearing but difficult. Not worth risking it.

Have you any experience to back up that possibility?

I've done a fair number of wheel bearings and thinking about removing the hub while not damaging the bearing seems like a challenge. I personally wouldn't do it don't like doing the same job twice.

This wasn't my mistake - they're the professionals. They'll have to do the same job twice and the mechanic who did it should have to do it for free.

Well, I brought the axles back to the shop first thing this morning. The mechanic who worked on them was there and said "that's the way they came". I'm pretty sure he was lying. I pointed out where the seal surface is centred on the retainer collar and that with the washer on the top, it would put that seal very close to where the chamfer and the washer meet - which would make the seal fail prematurely. He seemed to agree with me on that one. So, I hadn't yet heard back from the owner who I emailed and left a voice mail for on Friday night, so I left them and went back home.

I used the FJ Cruiser YT video as a clip example (above in the thread) and emailed a link to the owner as a follow up after I got back home. Soon after that, I got a call back from the owner who sided with his dishonest mechanic and even went so far as to say that my axles may have been modified which would explain why they were put together the wrong way. After mentioning that I can produce the FSM diagram and that I was 100% sure they weren't like that, he said he'd go ahead and put them together the "other way" if I wanted.

It feels like the owner of this establishment, who was recommended to me by another trusted mechanic, either doesn't know his **** or somehow is going to try to charge me for this mistake. This, even though he didn't say he would.

Now we wait and see.

I think that unless he said that he wouldn't charge you, you can expect to be charged for the additional work. I hope I'm wrong.

Axles repressed the way the FSM intended and taken away with no charge. Yet to see how unscathed this procedure will be...
That is, no charge from them, however, I will need to replace two hub studs that they "replaced" with regular bolts and nuts. This from a driveline specialist shop.
One that I will not recommend nor use again.
Hoping one of the 4 Toyota dealerships have 2 - 90942-02079 bolts in stock tomorrow.

Well, time to move my story to another thread. After reassembly, the noise is still there. Took it to the local mechanic who's now almost 70 and went for a spin. After all the wheel bearings and front CV axle change he says it could be differential or driveshaft. Or, could be something simple. Best to put it up on a hoist and look. Problem is, he's booked two weeks ahead.

What's the initial issue, a vibration? I not see the issue posted.

Were any dimensions taken using caliper and such when re-doing the bearings? Did the old bearings appear to be shot?

Have the U joints been greased on regular basis?
