I re-read above and missed that it was the Water Pump.
was there not indicator light that coolant was low
were there no leaks in the driveway ?
So, you caught the low fluid just from a check of the system?
Looks like I need to be more vigilant about the radiator checks

Wife's car so I don't drive it much, but no indicator light or anything noticeable on driveway etc. I just poke my head under the hood every so often just to check fluids and check for obvious problems (i know very little about engines and can't 'wrench'). I just noticed that I couldn't see any coolant in the reservoir so figured there was some sort of leak. Mostly I was worried about valley leak - I didn't even know timing chain cover leak was something else I should have been worried about
