2016 GX460 Catalytic Converter
My bank 2 cat has died. Took it to a shop and they told me my engine would need to be lifted and a bumper removed to get to it- quoted about 7 hours labor. My neighbor looked under my vehicle and said it was in plain view and there is no reason for all that work. Anyone have insight? I’m a grandma with no mechanical experience.

If they are the cats down below vehicle that should be relatively easy but if they are the integrated cats attached to the exhaust manifolds that is comparably a lot more work.

surely there will be comments not to do this but often people will gut the cat.
they might say how it can cause damage to the o2 sensors, less backpressure, cant pass emissions, illegal, etc.
just something to look into for educational purposes only.
if i knew more i would think that a long screwdriver, a hammer, a wrench and a shop vac are all that are needed.

With that said, the 02 output should be checked first to see if they are working.

I had a diagnostic run. O2 sensors were fine. They could hear the cat making noise. Bought it new in 2017. Seems a bit early for it to go bad.

Not sure if it applies but...
Not sure about the mileage but it sounds extremely early, most lasts for the lifetime of the vehicle, well into 200k-s without issues.
The federal emissions warranty is a manufacturer's warranty that may apply to certain emissions components in a vehicle if it fails an emissions test due to a manufacturer defect. The warranty covers specific major emission control components for eight years or 80,000 miles, whichever comes first. These components include: Catalytic converters...
