It's hard for me to do as I rather keep over in "S" but my freeway mileage is like 1-1.5MPG better if I leave in Drive (Eco Mode) versus sport. Probably more lockup of the torque converter I assume.

Yeah but I like the extra power in cold weather. I had an Acura Legend and could really feel a difference in cold weather. My GX, not so much but still there.

Wife gets like 14 on a good week. I think she pro-actively is trying to sabotage me (80% city with hills so in my book it’s as bad as it could be)
Barn door doesn’t bother me but I do wish I could load the car in the garage at times without having the garage door open. I have 100 series land cruiser and like the split door better. When we had an Rx we had issues in garages with the tailgate touching the ceiling which I never knew would be a problem until it smacked the ceiling. Non issue with the barn door but parallel parking can be tricky.

Thanks, all!
Never thought that GX can do more than 20mpg on highway. My MDX is around 18-19mpg for 70%city/30%highway. So probably bit worse than MDX depending on how you drive.
Have you also considered 4 Runner before? I have not tried out GX and 4Runner, yet but heard that 4Runner Limited is also a good comfortable ride with better gas mileage.

My wife commutes to work in the Houston area on surface streets. We average 15.7 like clockwork. We drove it to Florida a while back putting about 2200 miles on it. Obviously most of the trip was freeway averaging probably 75 MPH. On the 100% Freeway tanks we usually averaged right at 20. We did see stretches where we got as high as 22, but that is the exception.
We are not bothered at all by the tailgate, and we have owned many SUVs with other configurations. In fact l like the side opening because it’s easier to get to groceries and anything else back there. We are really never parked in a way that a normal hatch would be better. And don’t forget the rear window will open separately if you need to grab something in the net.

Have you ever done the math on how much you will save on gas by getting a vehicle that gets a few mpg better? I have and always wind up laughing out loud when I realize I might save $20-25 a month. I spend more than that drinking coffee at Starbucks instead of making my coffee at home. One of the reasons folks like us who are on the enthusiast side of car guys like the GX is because it has a low stressed drivetrain, has decent power and will likely outlive the the cockroach population.

My 2016 Acura MDX gets about 23MPG. Bone stock.

I want to say I get about 15mpg around town, with some spirited driving here and there.
20+ MPG is definitely achievable on the highway but if you drive at normal 80+mph speeds, more like high teens.
My wife's 2011 MDX might get one or two MPG better.
Driving 2017/18 4runner seemed like it got a couple MPG better as well, but they were 2WD models. Noticeably slower than a GX too.
Re: the swing door, I like it, pretty indifferent though. I like it because I can open it up and load/unload without having to open the garage door. With 4runner it would be a tight squeeze to get that liftgate open inside the garage with the door closed. But like Tecman said, you get rained on when loading outside.

I have 18K miles on a 2017. Averaging 17.7 so far but I was using cruise control on highway a lot. Lately been driving 75 to 80 and find im only getting 18 on the highway, vs 22 with CC. Also noticed in the winder I use heat, and seat warmer much more often impacting mileage. Lastly, seems harder to keep tires filled with air in the winter.

When My 2015 was at 27k miles, the overall mpg was 17.5. Two months ago I reset it and now it shows 15.0 mpg. It is so cold here so I remote-start at least 10 minutes twice daily and it KILLS my mpg.
I am indifferent about the swing door.
