About to pull the trigger on a 2011 GX460 w/88K miles with worn tires. Any recommendations on fuel efficient tires? This is going to be our family hauler with absolutely zero off roading. it's going to be a mix of 50/50 suburban / hwy driving. I want it to be somewhat capable in the philly winter but more concerned about fuel efficiency.

Defenders have the same utog rating I believe and are a little quieter I bet than the LTX. Either way, you probably can't go wrong.

Currently running Michelin LTX MS 2s on my 2011 gx460. I looked at the defenders and we have a set of those on my wife's lx570. They are great tires. The LTX makes a little more road noise than the latitudes I replaced. No difference in handling as far as I can tell, but they seem to be lasting a LOT longer than the latitudes (I have almost 30k on this set now and they still look like they have almost new tread depth). Utog rating on the LTX is 720, latitudes (stock) are a softer tire, and quieter and that's what the dealership wanted to put on, but I opted for the LTX for longer life.

I get a whopping 16.8 corrected with LT285/70/17 BFG KO2s and 47psi.

At 90k miles I believe my 2015 GX is finally breaking in. On average I am getting 19 mpg (80% hwy and 20% local). For out of town longer trip I am getting 21mpg. If I let the GX glide down from gas station to my house for that 1 mile at 35mph, I get 27mpg
. I often get 400 to 405 miles range after each fill-up. Trip computer display of mpg post fill up is quite accurate so far.
I use LTX defender tires and 87 shell only. All 4 tires 38 PSI.

Anyone know if the trip computer uses a moving average, or window, to calculate the average MPG or is it a simple average since last reset?

When I picked it up at the dealership with a full tank of gas, I had about 11 mpg because they left it running in the parking lot. I don't know if they reset it since filling up or not but I've been driving normally and I've managed to nurse the mpg back to 14ish. It's not like I drive below speed limit either. When I finally do my first fill up, I'm confident I can get at least 18 average, from full to near empty, the way I drive. In fact, I'm sure it will be easy.

I see many are running on regular. I thought premium fuel was required, as I am also looking at a possible upgrade to a GX, which would be used for planned trips in the future.

We went on a 500 mile road trip yesterday (246 miles each way) from Central Nebraska to Northwest Iowa to get a new puppy and I was honestly shocked at the mileage that our '22 GX Black Line Edition got for the trip.
It was easily 50% hill country with 100ft elevation changes on the hills including ~20 miles of urban driving and the GX averaged 20.8mpg for the trip. That is with OEM sized Falken Rubitrek tires and the complete set of BudBuilt 3/16" skid plates plus ~150lbs of extra stuff in the back of the vehicle.
I have zero complaints about how the GX drove for the trip and I can't think of a vehicle I'd rather take on that trip honestly. It's so quiet compared to other vehicles I've owned (including a 2016 SR5 4Runner) I generally dislike driving so for me not to hate it by the time we got home was a new feeling for me.

That’s very close to my numbers. I went on a 3,000 mile trip last month maybe 75% highway with cruising speeds up to 85. The first part (all highway 1,050 miles), I hit over 22 mpg. My final average was 21.2 mpg for the trip.
oh and I ran regular unleaded, not premium. Stayed with Shell or BP stations.

I have no complaints whatsoever about the mileage the GX gets in its current form given the benefits the V8 offers.
It's a shame that the V8 is going away rather than just putting an 8-speed transmission into the existing platform.
