Thanks for the explanation of summer and winter fuel, Craig. I was aware of blending ethanol, but presumed that was an ongoing 'adulteration' rather than a seasonal change.

You're welcome! We have 10% ethanol year round in Missouri...

I run top tier 94 octane premium from Conoco/Phillips. The funny thing is BP is not top tier for some reason. I used to run their fuel all the time using their Ultimate 93 octane. Then, Conoco/Phillips opened a new station that sells 94 octane, so I switched to their 94 octane...
The Shell here only has 91 octane premium. I have used their fuel in St. Louis. They carry 93 octane.

Valero is NOT on the list, which is where we have been buying our gas. However, they do sell 93 octane. So, they offer the octane, but not the standards of Top Tier gasoline. Good thing that there are lots of Shell stations in our immediate area!

Anything over 91 octane is useless and a waste of money. The 4.6 has a boarderline need for premium fuel (91 octane).

I can feel a difference from 91-93/94 octane in my GX 460. The shop foreman at the Lexus dealer told me I should use the highest octane in both my GX and LS 460

Just to add to this, I have a Shell platinum master card that gives me 5% off Shell gas. So I get premium for the price of regular.

I had my GX at the dealer yesterday. They installed the software update for hesitation. My rotors needed to be turned. I don't use the brakes heavy, so I don't know how they got warped.

There is NO difference in the amount of energy in the different octanes. There is also NO difference in fuel mileage. The best octane to use in any vehicle is the lowest octane without engine knock. Once you have eliminated knock any more octane is just a waste of money. The only difference octane makes is its ability to prevent engine knock. Anything over the OEM recommended octane does NOTHING! What makes a difference in fuel is how well it keeps your system clean.

Craig:

May we see the information you received from Lexus about the software update for hesitation?

Our 2010 GX 460 (Serial # 518) with a DoFU of February 2010 has received only the software update for the vehicle stability control software:

http://www.lexus.com/pdf/models/GX-R...ss-Release.pdf

There is no information about additional safety recalls for our Lexus at our Lexus Drivers page, which is specific to our vehicle by VIN. Perhaps the software update is available for those drivers who complain about hesitation, which we have never experienced.

SaniDel
