Default Remove retention pins?

Anyone know how to (easily) remove the carpet retention pins in the front (without damaging the carpet or grommets)? Not the driver's side - seems that the premium floor mats for the GX 460 have no holes/grommets for the front passenger carpet, although the floor has retention pins installed. The new all-weather floor mats have passenger-side holes, as do the dealer installed carpets; just none in the premium passenger mat. Choices are to 1) simply place on top of the pins (not a good option in my opinion), or 2) remove the floor pins and lay the carpet on top; don't really need them for the passenger, and can replace for the all-weather mats in the winter, although I'm not impressed with the quality of the new all-weathers so may just leave the carpet in. Any assistance welcome!

Simply pull the pins out. They are held in by friction. They are tight but will come off with a good tug. I just removed them in my GX last week.

Good luck.

Tried that - looks like they're held in by "barbs" on the pin shaft - locked into the grommets. I haven't been able to get them out and I put a lot of force on them; I have replacement pins and can see the tabs on the end of the shaft - it would seem that when these are in place they wouldn't come out unless you break them (don't mind doing that, but don't want to break the grommets).

They will pop out, just pry it from the long end.

They are very difficult to remove. The 'barbs' on the pin shaft need to be compressed to release easily. Very thin needle nose pliers might do that, but brute force will ... use one hand to hold down the carpet and grommet and pry the pin from the long end after you have unhooked and removed the mat.

Thanks all! Did get 'em out by holding the grommet and prying on the long end - I was afraid of damaging the carpet or the grommet but it just takes some force. You'd think Lexus would put the corresponding holes in the passenger carpet since the clips are already installed...

Our early- production (November 2009) 2010 GX 460 has neither holes, clips nor grommets on either the carpeting or the mats for the passenger side so something has changed. Our unit is the base model and came with base mats, but our dealer provided a set of premium mats as a goodwill gesture. The premium mats are noticeably plusher and of a better grade material, but also are lacking holes on the passenger mats.
