0W-20 Synthetic.

At 5k miles they ONLY rotate tires and do "checkings" = waste of time. At 10k miles they will change oil and filter, rotate tires and do "checkings".

At that price why DIY? The hassle of making an appointment would be a factor.

Guessing they are trying to bring you in to find other problems such as brake wear or anything they can find to compensate for this low price oil change.

For me it is about knowing the job is done right and at my own leisure. Oil filter cap was damaged on mine by previous servicing dealerships.

Does the oil filter cap wrench work on both the plastic and the metal housings or does each require a dedicated unit?

The benefits of DIY:

1. You know the right oil and filter is used (yes dealers sometimes don't use the approved oil).
2. You know it is actually drained and filled and the filter is actually changed instead of some lazy mechanic skipping it.
3. You can inspect the vehicle from underneath yourself, CV boots, transfer case etc.

There's probably more....

I have been normally going to the same dealer for my sevice as living in nyc there is nowhere to do maintenance on my own car, I asked the dealer about lubing the driveshaft/grease fittings and they said they never do this. I called another dealer and they also confirmed that they no longer do this although they acknowledged it to be in the service manual. Do dealers normally not perform this service and for those that cant work on cars do you take it to independent mechanics?

That is disconcerting to hear about them not lubing the zerks. I could tell the ones on mine have never been touched. Certainly something you want addressed if you are a long term owner.

Will pick up one of those. I'm going to convert mine on the next oil change and just start doing them myself...

The metal cap has such a good feel to it. You won't have any doubts on when it is tightened up.

I just changed my oil myself. The dealer had previously put the oil filter cap on SO darn tight that I had to use an air-chisel to take it off. (I used the air chisel to break it up into pieces and then I removed all the pieces). I then replaced the plastic Toyota cap with a metal cap. (See:
https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-917-016-Oil-Filter-Cap/dp/B0075MREHI/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1512403217&sr=1-4&keywords=lexus+gx460+oil+filter+cap https://www.amazon.com/Dorman-917-016-Oil-Filter-Cap/dp/B0075MREHI/ref=sr_1_4?s=automotive&ie=UTF8&qid=1512403217&sr=1-4&keywords=lexus+gx460+oil+filter+cap
) Boy, the metal cap is so much better!
Not only did the dealer overtighten my oil filter cap when they did an oil change, but, after doing the change, they told me that my rear brake shoes were worn down and needed to be replaced. Likewise, they told me that the rear brake shoe replacement would be $325. I told them that I would take care of the brakes myself. I ordered a new set of Wagner brake shoes for $38 (I didn't cheap out and get the $32 shoes!) I installed the brake shoes in 30 minutes. (Total cost: $38) I'm sure that the dealer could do it faster since they change brake shoes all the time, but spending 30 minutes on it myself saved me about $300 and trips to/from the dealership.
Changing the oil: Once a person figures out how to access the oil filter, then changing the oil isn't that difficult. And, as others say above, "IT IS WORTH IT" - knowing that it was/is done correctly.
For sure, a person needs to be a little bit mechanically inclined. You need to have some ramps to drive your vehicle up on (so you can get underneath), and you need to have an oil drain pan/container.
While you are doing your own oil change, you will also find that it is simple to check, and replace your engine air filter (if needed). (The dealers charge you extra for that).
I love my Lexus. But it drives me nuts that Lexus assumes that Lexus Owners are mechanically incompetent and that they have plenty of excess money to throw at their vehicles. It's for that reason that the owners' manual tells you nothing about how/where to do an oil change, or even how to change an air filter. The cabin air filter can be purchased on Amazon for about $14 and it takes about 5 minutes to change. Yet, if you have the dealer do it, you'll pay $85 - $100 for the same filter change.
Believe me, it pays (YOU) to do as much DIY as you can.

I actually changed the oil & filter of my 2014 GX460 without jacking up or ramp.
the space is a bit tight but it can be done.
the hardest part is to remove/re-install the steel skid plate, it is pretty heavy.

How much would we estimate the skid plate weighs?

I think they say around 20 lbs on the 4Runner forums which uses a very similar unit. One reason I like to put up on ramps is it gives a better view to look around for any potential leaks or damage I was unaware of.

If you’re interested in a more stout filter housing with Fumoto valve built in, check out this thread for a group buy with 15% off. It’s waiting list now since they are out of stock.
