I was able to thread out the broken piece from the other side IIRC with some needle nose pliers. I'm trying to remember which specific one it was but it was the "smaller" of the bolts used.

Lexus says 10,000, the dealer reminder sticker says 3,000. I know conventional wisdom is typically 3,000-5,000. What is everyone else's experience? Has anyone noticed any excessive degradation or consumption prior to 10,000 miles? I check the oil regularly but I feel there would probably be a noticeable difference in wear after 200,000+ miles changing it every 3-5000 as opposed to 10,000 or is that just not the case anymore?
I can and I can't believe a dealer would recommend an interval so far off what the factory recommends.
With the quality of synthetics, it is not the oil that is the problem. A lot depends on the environment you're in and how you drive your car. Moisture and contaminants in the oil are the biggest culprits for reducing the oil's ability to lubricate and cool. Also the most important time for oil is upon startup. So if you live in a high humidity area and lots of starts and stops, more frequent oil changes may be in order. If you want to be quantitative, have your oil tested at 3,000 mile frequencies or so (Blackstone labs) and determine what is the appropriate change frequency for your car and your style of driving.
A co-worker actually just walked in showing me his Blackstone report. Sounds like i should find out the brand the dealer uses since they give a data driven opinion on how long certain brands last.
I’m doing 7.5k interval. Most of my other cars are 6-7k interval too. Oil is just too cheap and I usually can feel the engine isn’t as smooth when it’s reaching 8k or so.
I change every 5k-6k Miles. Most of my driving is city. This puts me close to the severe service where most manufacturers tighten intervals.
10K might be ok. But for me I would like to see what duty cycle that number is based on and what he design point was for selecting the interval. Otherwise the cost of oil is much cheaper than a rebuild later assuming I keep the car 200K plus.
I am thinking 5-7500 might be the best bet for my region and driving habits. Does anyone know if Lexus uses proprietary oil or re brands and specific company's oil? Or do they just use the cheapest bulk they can find.
This is a copy of my co-workers Blackstone Lab report. Seems like it helps to know the brand you or your mechanic/tech regularly use since they can benchmark it.
That's a good report. Most important measures are:
iron/aluminum (this might indicate something mechanically is failing...although it might be better to cut the filter open and inspect the filter for metallic debris)
I'm in the "Every 7500 miles" camp as well with the GX (I do every 5k with my other vehicles). I was doing every 10k intervals, but the UOA I did with Toyota oil provided some indication that the oil was breaking down at that point. So I switched to 7500.
If your dealer is putting Toyota synthetic 0w20 in your engine, then changing it every 3k miles is a waste. I would confirm your dealer is using the correct oil first, and if so, then peel off the sticker and make your own determination on when to change the oil. The maintenance guide specifies every 10k miles, so as long as you stay in that range you have no warranty concerns.
I personally think changing every 5k miles with a synthetic oil is just throwing money down the drain, but to each their own.
Agreed. Normal driving on a Synthetic is 10K. Then it also requires a definition of normal driving conditions (i.e. no towing, no stop and go city traffic, repeated start stops on the ignition). My former ES and RX always went 10K between their changes other than the provided services. No issues and the oil, according to my SA/mechanic came out clean enough to be put back in. Then again, I don't two and don't live in a city for stop and go traffic. Judge your parameters.
