thanks. I'm finding it odd the oil filter wouldn't have a bypass feature if it flowed out to in.... are there no Lexus techs or reps on here that know for sure?
no on the relocation.... thinking of swapping the canister drain plug for one with an integral magnet is all.
You may want to ask on GXOR on FB if you are on there. There are some Lexus technicians on that site.
There seems to be so little filter media internally compared to external part of filter. It would seem this would increase chances of clogging...I'm no filter expert though.
Will your drain plug magnet push in that spring loaded bypass?
I had tried this tool but it didn't make sense since it drained very little oil with horizontal layout of filter. As you screw this in in opens up that bypass.
Not the oil pan drain plug... I know that is 12X1.25, the aluminum oil filter housing drain is what I'm interested in... also interested in the oil flow path thru the filter element if anyone knows for sure. thank you
got it, i didnt read close enough. whoever changes their oil next should be able to measure the drain part with the new filter. i always pitch those first thing since i dont use the drain feature.
if no one else answers, then next oil change i will measure it. another idea is if the local big chain hardware store sells the filters, get a filter, go to the caliper isle, and measure. or better yet take the drain part to the hardware isle, and check it on the thread checkers in the nuts and bolts isle.
outside in would mean that optimally the magnet is on the inside to catch what would pass through and to not catch what the filter would have caught anyways.
heres a place that has some test data http://www.oilfiltermagnets.com
i have heard of the magnets in the aftermarket oil drain plugs becoming disconnected from the plug.
Suggestions:
get the fumoto valve F103S (with vinyl hose 1/2” OD, 3/8”ID)
anti seize on the bolts
hand tighten oil filter
clean the interior skid plates from the salt!...
I highly recommend getting a fumoto valve for a cleaner oil change. The wind was blowing the other day and the oil was getting everywhere!
The fumoto I bought came with the shorter nipple which has enough room to attach a vinyl hose to and be low profile so it doesn’t touch the skid. The vinyl tubing hose is 1/2” O/D, 3/8” ID found in the Home Depot plumbing section $5 for 10 ft.
All my bolts were tightened way too much by the previous Lexus tech. I had a smaller impact drill that was struggling. I highly recommend anti seize for people in salt and snow regions.
My oil filter was installed by the worlds strongest man. I struggled to free the plastic filter cover. It was switched to the metal filter cover and hand tightened.
I didn’t put the skids back yet. I need to wash them down and spray some rust preventative on them and on my front chassis this weekend. 2.5 years in with undercarriage cleanings at the car wash didn’t help much since the skids blocked most of the fresh water.
Live and learn.... I might do a POR15 coating or fluid film the undercarriage every fall before winter.
If I'm converting to the new cap, do I need the cap if I'm going to a Fumoto valve? Also does each new filter come with a big and small o-ring? About to do my first oil change so need to get it all in order. If anyone has the other part#s please share:
Oil filter for aluminum cap = #041524-ZZA5
Aluminum filter cap assembly = #15620-31060
