New member here. Purchased a new 2021 GX460 and did a oil and filter change at 1200 miles. I know it’s debatable whether or not to get rid of the factory oil but I did. I used 2 Rhino ramps on the front end. First of all the skid plates were a hassle only because it was my first time. I removed the front skid plates completely and opened up the small cover for the drain plug access. Added 7.5 qts., started it back up to get it off the ramps, checked the level then added the remaining .7 qts. Just wanted to chime in on my initial experience. Just alittle more tedious than other oil changes but was good to see whats under the hood.
Here here. Did my 1st oil change on my -new to me- 2010 GX460. I was able to do this without lifting the car but the skid plate is a major pain. I used an Autocraft oil cap wrench that I got in Autozone and it worked well. I have seen in the Tundra forums that several guys cut a hole on the skid plate and it works just fine. I am planning to do this and also repair a couple of stripped bolts from the previous owner. Will post my experience here...
I installed a remote system on my 2015 5.7 Tundra using a cartridge filter adapter. 300psi 5/8"ID internally braided hose with anodized AN fittings. Also, a remote sump drain with a quick disconnect hydraulic fitting that allows me to drain the oil via vacuum tank. No skid plates to remove and I don't have to get underneath the vehicle, I'm good with that. But I have been modifying engines and related systems for a long time on both aircraft and cars, I'm comfortable with what I do, It's not for everyone.
Been looking at doing something similar to the 4runner. Question on the location of the filter, are the photos taken from the tundra or the SUV? I’m trying to find a good location to run a dual bypass system. Also any suggestion for the adapter on the OE filter location?

hi Brutus, I can’t claim the work above, it was Dextr post. I have been looking at doing a 2 filter by pass system. Dextr’s work is super clean on the Tundra. I realize he is using a Baxter Performance filter adapter. Now I just got to find a good place in the 4runner!
Nice, the 4runner skid plate pretty much has the outline for the cut. What tool did you use to cut the plate?
I just went to a shop to cut it for me. I didn’t want to buy another tool and use it once. They did a good job grinding it down smooth on the edges. I sprayed it with black mat wheel paint I had laying around.
Lexus master tech on GXOR reports that 040 will work for metal oil filter cap mod as well. This removes the need for 050 but it is about twice the price. No need to swap internal piece from your old cap with 040 option.

I currently own a 2011 Gx460 with 135k. I have been running motul 0w-20 and changing it every 5K, but as I am now into high mileage territory I was wondering if I should move to a thicker grade of oil? My engine has been running like a champ thus far.
the only way to tell is to do an oil analysis now and after you made the switch to thicker. blackstone can do this for you - https://www.blackstone-labs.com/
but in my opinion, you can probably stick with 0w-20 for the entire life of the vehicle.

Are you burning oil or losing oil from oil seal leakage ? If not, then why change ? If you are concerned that the oil is too thin to protect the engine, then the same question can be asked at any mileage. For me, I run 10w-30 and have since new given I live in a temperate climate in Washington State. If you research the exact same engine in non-US markets, Toyota recommends heavier weight from new. US regulations have pretty much forced the majority of manufacturers to recommend 0w-20 and 10,000 mile oil change intervals ... with engine longevity as a result bumped in terms of priority.
Last time I was at the Lexus dealer and spoke with the service tech (Jan 2021), I saw that there was a jug of 0w16 oil in his workstation. IIRC, he said that Lexus is moving to that weight for all of its vehicles.

Continued regulatory push in that direction ... with 0w-8 apparently being the next increment.
