^ not even close to being frequent enough. Also, as a general rule ... it takes 2-3 times longer for the oil to reach operating temperature as the coolant (engine temperature gauge).

2017 GX460 - changing my own oil
Hey everyone,
(I copied this from my Reddit post that didn’t get many useful responses). I want to start changing my own oil on my DD/overland rig. With the exception of the oil and the metal cap removal adapter, am I missing anything needed for an oil change? Is the factory recommended 5,000 mile interval with full synthetic the way to go? Anything I need to look out for? Finally, what oil do you recommend for a daily driver with 56,000 miles?

I'm a big fan of the screw-in funnel and use it both on my GX and my wife's Highlander. Works great and makes it easy to fill. People will have all kinds of opinions about oil, but if you're changing every 5k, "generic" 0W-20 from Costco or Amazon work great. Make sure you pick up a batch of crush washers for the drain plug, and you can usually get the filters by the case for cheaper.
Getting the skid plate off is a PITA, but if you take off the plastic filler plate in front of the front skid, it makes removing that skid much easier. I ended up getting a BudBuilt skid plate just for the oil door so I never have to remove mine again lol.
Otherwise, it's as simple as any other Toyota.

Buy a 10 pack of the drain plug washers. Part number is 90430-12031. They sell them on Amazon among other places.
As stated, lowering the skid plate is the biggest pain, but you have to do it to access the oil filter. You'll need the tool to remove the oil filter cartridge - it goes on your 3/8" or 1/2" socket wrench (depending on what you buy). Like this:

And be gentile when tightening the drain plug after you drain the oil. It barely requires any torque at all - just snug with a 3/8" socket wrench.

Been using Costco 0w20 on my 4runner every 5k currently at 118k (bought with 50k) and also using the same oil for my 21 GX with 17k currently on the clock (bought with 13k so due for second change soon). Home oil changes are good... Lexus service records said my car had the oil changed at 12k and I did the change again at 13k when I bought it and the oil was jet black and smelled like gas, a good sign it was either never changed (as claimed by lexus records) or that it wasn't changed since the first oil change recorded at 5k. Either way the oil was at least one year old. Glad I do my own now. I'll have to look into that skid plate the other poster mentioned

I know, I know, but oil spec. question.
To keep it short, I have some Motul and Redline Oil on hand, 5w30. Had it from BMW days, but those are long gone. They meet the API SN specifications, but not the ILSAC GF-5 one. I think the ILSAC is there for pre-ignition wear and/or carbon output (might be wrong). However, I’ve read that it’s mostly for GDI engines, ours are not. Did Toyota spec this for other reasons aside from engine wear? My question is, will it be kosher to use either oil in the 2nd gen GX460, or has anyone had any prior experiences.
I know its best to use recommended oil, I know 5w30 shouldn’t be used, I know oil recommendations are like a holes, just looking to see if anyone on forums had prior experience. Thanks ahead.
Bonus - Does the 460 Transfer Case require GL-4 or GL-5? Or does it not matter, on manual only says 75W. Thanks.

For those who think 10k miles is ok and send their oil to the lab.

10k mile oil change intervals are a marketing ploy for auto manufacturers to tout lower cost of maintenance.
in reality, it isnt good for your engine.
change your oil more frequently than 10k miles.
dealers buy whatever oil is cheapest, not some high quality dealer-only product.

On that note has anyone done the 10k oil change interval and experienced problems on the GX460? And if so what issues and at what mileage?
