Need to buy a GX. First Gen, or spend extra bucks for Second?
Is it worth the money to buy a second gen? I can get a first gen with reasonable miles for about 25k, and a second gen for 35-40. I will drive the car for 5-7 years, or at least my wife will. Any opinions on which is best to buy?

IMO the first gen GX felt more like a Toyota inside than the second gen GX which to me is more on par as a Lexus. You also will get more features in the 2nd gen like cooling seats etc if that is your thing.

Some very good improvements that need to be considered; the drive-train went from the 4.7 V8 w/5 speed trans to the 4.6 V8 (more hp and torque) w/6 speed trans. In addition, KDSS is standard on all 2nd gen models and AVS is optional.

I have owned both (2004 & 2012) and the 2012 is a much more refined vehicle. Drives much better, handles much better, and has more modern options. Just my opinion but I would stick with the second generation. Of course, you should drive both so that you can see the differences for yourself...you don't want that little nagging voice in your head after you buy one saying "what if".

Nope. Got it under dealer cost. I needed an SUV now and couldn't wait. Plus, when the 2014 first come out, there will be very little discount until the 2015 model year. So, with the slight price hike in 2014, plus the fact that there will be very little discounts for 6-9 months, I figured I saved a few thousand bucks.

I had a 2008 and now a 2012. I loved my 2008, very reliable but the brake calipers will go, not if but when so just know that when purchasing. I still like the looks of it even though it looks a little dated but even loaded, it was missing some features that are somewhat normal today like vented seats, parking sensors, HIDs, power third row, blue tooth audio, etc. The 2012 has all of this and more (of course at a pretty good price increase). Both are great SUVs but I would go for the gen 2 based on the features even though there are some things I liked about my gen 1 better.

no toyota or lexus dealer will ever sell a new car below cost, at a loss ie.

Thank you all for your input. Since I just bought an 09 LS460 3 months ago, I decided to go with the first gen. Will drive for a year or 2 then upgrade to LX, most likely. Drove second gen and noticed all that you all said, and I agree, but my bottom line came down to price, and I paid 20k less for a first gen with 50k on the clock, warranteed to 100, so I'm happy. Thanks Again!
