87 will run fine in it. There is real time knock adjustment for timing(Knock Feedback Value) as well as a long term average adjustment based on the the PCM's perceived quality of the fuel(Knock Correction Learned Value or KCLV). So over time, as the PCM learns from the real time performance of the fuel from the Knock Feedback Value, it will globally advance or retard the timing using the KCLV. A OBD bluetooth module can monitor KFV and KCLV if you wanted to try it out and see what happens. I believe KCLV starts at 16 by default but I have seen my GX460 up near 24 when running 91 octane.

There is nothing special about the GX460 or about the engine that would make it incapable of running 87. You will probably lose a little power since the factory ratings assume premium fuel, but that is it. They rate it on premium fuel because you are already buying a $60,000+ vehicle that gets crap mileage anyways and it sounds fancier.

Whether it is worth it or not is up to you. Where I live, I have access to 85, 88, and 91 octane. 91 is only 20 cents more than 88 and, at ~$4.00 per gallon, that 20 cents is a small difference and I just run 91 all the time.

Estimate your annual mileage, then calculate the annual cost difference between premium and regular. Finally, consider if the amount is worth worrying over. If not, just put in premium, if so then continue down rabbit hole of debate and a multitude of opinions.

If you bought it, use premium. If you leased it, use whatever you want. A master tech is still someone that just fixes broken things. The designer/engineer is the one that designed and created the engine and owners manual is based on the engineers specs and recommendation. Anyone can believe or listen to whoever they want. Its their car and wallet at the end of the day.

My only comment on the "engineer" thing is that this same exact motor is used in multiple other vehicles and is recommended to use 87 octane. The Tundra, Sequoia, and international 200 series with the 1UR-FE all say 87 is acceptable.

Maybe if I am not lazy I will open up the tunes in VFTuner for the various trucks mentioned and compare the timing tables to the GX460

goes back to mfg claims. mfg can use premium to claim some higher values.
they need to require it in order for later verification checks to show meeting the claims.

You guys are overthinking this lol. I had 08 gx470 for several yrs only ran 87 fuel no issues. Now I own '17 gx460, I will keep using 87. One of the reason why is here in Las Vegas 87 and 91 difference is like 70cents/gallon. With newer turbo charged toyotas you better use premium.

Ouch. Here in UT its like 20 cents from 88 to 91. But 88 is our mid-grade. And when each gallon is ~$4, that 20 cents isnt a big deal.

Hahaha.. What date did you get your GX?

I got mine on 12/5/23. Still have half a tank from the dealer. I am anxious about the cost when I will fill it on my own! LOL.

I swear, I didnt think about gas mileage at all at the dealership. We went in for a NX 350 but it wasn't available and the GX on the showroom floor was just too attractive to me! Decided on the fly.
