Windshield replacements are common across all makes and models. SUVs with large, upright windshields are worse.
It was likely a rock that hit the windshield and it didn't sound that loud, or you forgot about it. A star crack outside your line of sight can grow weeks or months later after you forgot anything even hit the windshield.

I already got a small pit in my new windshield.... not deep enough to cause a chip though.
Lots of debris from all the summer road construction around here.

I've used one of those windshield fixer kit to stop the cracks from getting bigger on a few cars and it's been working good. Maybe it's worth a shot if you don't want to replace the windshield right away.

I think it varies from state-to-state. In Washington state, where I live it is based on whatever your insurance comprehensive deductible is at. They will waive deductible for repairable rock chips though.

Good to hear!
Any future windshield replacements I will order parts beforehand as well.
My installer didn't put in a new rain pad but told me if auto wipers don't work right to let him know and he will put in a new pad. I really haven't a chance to test as rainy Seattle area hasn't had any measurable rain for over 57 days now.
