Default 2010-2013 Lexus GX460 Premium vs 2014 Grand Cherokee Summit

Hello,

I would appreciate an advice from past or current owners of this 2 cars. I'm an owner of 2 Lexus RX(RX300 in the past and currently RX400) and a Jeep Wrangler. Now I'm looking to replace my RX400 with a GX or GK Summit. I like this new Grand Cherokee for all the features it has (it checks the boxes for everything) like panoramic room, blind spots, adaptive cruise control, adjustable air suspension, big screen nav etc. but I'm concerned about their reliability and mechanical and electrical issues. On the other hand I like Lexus for their reliability but missing few extras that Summit has.

Personally I would steer clear of any Fiat Chrysler product, particularly one outside of its warranty. I have to admit I did show Jeep Wranglers but even then I did feel guilty about it. For what it's worth, the Wranglers are much simpler and a bit more reliable than the rest of the Jeep/Chrysler lineup. And once you step outside of the Wrangler realm, resale on anything else they make is very poor.

Then again my GX is currently sitting in the garage awaiting a Takata airbag replacement while I drive a Toyota loaner

If you're buying on features though the Jeep is probably better equipped. If you opt for the premium 10-13, you'll get a nicely appointed GX, but you'll be missing a lot of infotainment features you might get on the Jeep.

GX all the way! Reliability is superb. Don't trap yourself into those fancy gadgets that they have in Cherokee, its reliability and resale suck. Don't even to have to think about it.

I purchased a used 2013 GX 460 Premium in July 2015 with 45,000 miles. After driving it a 14 months and 10,000 miles, it is a great vehicle. I have no complaints and no issues. All I added were all weather mats. This is my second used Lexus.

This past February I traveled to Phoenix / Tucson for 10 days. I rented a brand new 2016 Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited, it had less than 100 miles on it. Before the 10 days and 1,700 miles were up, some plastic piece in the rear cargo area had broken off, one time the sun roof would not close with out turning off and restarting the vehicle, one time the vehicle wouldn't go into PARK and one time I couldn't unlock the doors. These issues along with numerous nuisance issues left a very negative impression in my mind. I had never driven a Grand Cherokee prior to that rental.

Smile Previous GC Owner Weighing In

I drove a 2012 Jeep Grand Cherokee Overland for 4.5 years, and in that 4.5 years I put 160k miles on it. I had the Unlimited MaxCare Warranty.

My 4th year of driving it, it was in the shop once a quarter. I am 6' 185lbs and had to replace the seat cushion 3x. Both catalytic converters failed me and cost me $1250. That's when I bought the Lexus.
It was good to me the first few years, but then really started breaking down. Squeaks, rattles, etc. If not for the warranty, I would have had THOUSANDS in repairs.

Also worth noting, most repairs take several days because parts are never kept on-hand. And your loaner car, if you get one? A Dodge Journey.

Currently thoroughly enjoying my *used* 2016 GX Luxury.
