Lockers - Front & Rear Differential
#46
really need to determine its worth to you. those who off road a lot add them, even if never used, to be able to say they have them. better is to reflect on if you have ever been stuck and unable to get out without a tow or push, tracks, or some other aid. then also consider if you plan to change your driving habits or add off road to the mix. theres many different scenarios where different tools might be the best option. crossing a small, narrow but deep trench could be better dealt with using tracks. stuck in mud or sand, and the GX options dont work, might be best with a shovel, tracks, a winch, even an air jack if careful.
ive only once been stuck with the GX. was extremely high centered and lockers would not help in that case. once i needed to pull something (offroad) and all 4 tires would slip due to mud, the weight of what was stuck, and the lack or tire traction. lockers would not have helped.
the GX atrac, MTS and 4wd are not the slip and grip as with most vehicles. this is why lockers can be much more beneficial to add to other vehicles.
all that being said, i really liked having them (OEM) on an older 4runner. On certain offroad trails, the lockers can make the task smoother, less noisy, and increase confidence that you can pass the area in the same way as others in different vehicles.
