I second the thank you and had the same situation and resolution as Ken350,

Good tip for everyone to remember to disconnect the pump if failure occurs. It at least gives you normal performance until you can get into dealer.

Thanks for that tip, does one also need to clear the codes for this to work? Though my GX is still under warranty, I expect to be on a long road trip with no easy access to a Lexus dealer and do not want to be stuck in limp mode. Would the iCarsoft i905 be a good choice to clear codes until I can get to a Lexus dealer?
Thanks

I think anything but the absolute cheapest should work to clear codes. With phone software and a $15 ELM327 OBD2 wifi adapter I got a few years back it works on anything I have thrown at it.

From Tecman's post above and what I have seen on Tundra forums it should still work fine even with CEL and codes not reset with pump disconnected. If anyone has seen or heard otherwise please chime in.

^^ That should be more than adequate to clear the codes

Thanks for the replies.

To clarify: In the event one or both of the air valves have stuck open or closed (but the air pump/fan is working fine) then I can do the following?

**Unplug the air pump, clear codes (may not be needed), drive as normal with CEL light on until I can get the vehicle to a Lexus dealer.**

If doing this prevents the limp-home-mode, then it sound like that by unplugging the air pump/fan, the emissions computer sees a fault in the system and deactivates the operation of the air valves, with the only affect being the illuminated CEL. Is this correct?

Also, with the air pump/fan disconnected, will the vehicle still have all the normal traction control/performance/safety features operating just as it does when there has been no error?

Mine is CPO, so I expect a Lexus dealer will do the work under warranty. I just don't want to be stuck in a limp mode or limited use (4wd system/safety features etc) and be stranded someplace semi-remote while on a road trip.

Thanks

^^ Yes, this does seem to be the case. Stuck valves put me into limp mode and stuck valves plus a pump failure have not. If you are not in limp mode I don't see any reason why you would loose any systems or features.

Why not use Carista, our CL sponsor?
I have their device and app. It reads Toyota/Lexus specific ECU codes and will clear them.
I got it for my Audi, but used it for the Lexus as well.

Reasons:
$40 for the adapter and $40 for a year subscription, after two years it would be the same price as the i905. The Carista subscription price could increase. With the i905, I own it and can sell it later on. The i905 is to use in case of the air intake valve failure and allow me to continue on with a trip where there is no Lexus dealer nearby (have 1.5 years left of CPO warranty). I'm smart phone illiterate and use it only as a phone, text and google maps on occasions. I don't always have a phone with me, but can leave the i905 in the GX.

Last time I played with Carista back in 2014 it was a one time cost... it looks like they converted to subscription model in the last year or two.

I didn't know Carista went to a subscriptions service. Maybe I am grandfathered in? If I need to pay annual fees I will drop their service and buy something else.

Email sent to Carista with a link to this thread.
