Actually the issue can affect any Toyota and Lexus 4.6/4.7 and 5.7L V8s.
Even if it failed after free warranty repair you can either put ~$300 bypass on or obtain the aftermarket parts for around the same price. I have an UNI filter on mine and removed the foam but that only addresses issues created by water ingestion. It is possible to have the valves fail on the exhaust as well. I've seen the examples where the foam was intact inside the air pump.
If you do run into issue disconnect air pump to keep out of limp mode.
I have a 2012 GX460 with 66,000 miles it has had zero problems since new only service items are oil ,tires and filters ,brakes. I have really loved this vehicle .
Yesterday check engine light came on , 4Lo , and trac control light on .
I took to dealer today and they said some sort of air pump in engine that pumps air into engine had failed and would require replacing the part is $850 and labor is the rest $1500.
He said it would eventually go into limp mode if not fixed. and was common problem with the toyota and lexus models like the GX, Sequoia , and 4 runners..
I asked about the traction control and 4lo and he said they all just come on to get your attention , but they were fine?
Does anyone have any infor about this ?
Lexus of Greenville fixed my vehicle at no cost..I went in told them the problem they fixed it...weird same year almost identical miles...
Same problem on 4.6L GX460 and 4.7L GX470 and 4runner 4.7L
Can't believe Toyota/Lexus are still using this bad design in the 2018 GX460 where a $3 foam filter can render your car inoperable and only after 60K miles.
Anyone know if this issue was resolved on newer GX models? If so, how were they able to remedy the issue?
model: gx460
problem was eventually fixed by replacing affected pump that was pulling in moisture/debris and sending the debris to the valves. remedy involved changing pump with updated pump w/ cover, blowing out debris from lines, and replacing valves.
Not all failures are the debris ending up in the valves though. Many are but Tecman's failure was valves themselves and foam was intact.
I can't find the post right now but tecman's replacement cap picture shows they put a ridge inside the cap so the foam won't go into the fan when wet. They also put a cover over the top of the air pump to reduce risk of water intrusion. This is TSB fix as well as what is on the '14+.
Got my official warranty extension letter today from Lexus with the sticker they tell you to put into your warranty booklet. It has my VIN and warranty inception date. I doubt I will reach 150K miles anytime soon so 5/12/2022 will be the expiration on this extended warranty piece.
Unfortunately I have no idea... other than associating my rig on Lexus site and my known dealer visits for new FOB, water pump replacement and front passenger air bag replacement.
I would think the passenger air bag replacement would trigger it for you though. That being said you should still be covered.
Reimbursed by Lexus for Independent Local Shop repair
Hi All,
Just wanted to let my fellow GX owners know that Lexus reimbursed me for the secondary air pump on our 2013 GX 460 with 78K miles. My wife was driving when the warning lights came on. I picked up the car and took it to a local San Diego shop that gets good Yelp reviews. Our dealer experience was very limited. We bought the car used from the original owner in April of this year after doing a pre-purchase inspection at a Lexus dealer in Orange County, CA. The car went into "limp mode" which is pretty nerve wracking since the acceleration is awful on the freeway and hills.
The indy shop replaced the OEM parts which came from Los Angeles and charged me for five hours of labor. The DAY AFTER the repair I found out on this site that the warranty had been extended to 10 years and 150K miles. I sent Lexus a letter and my receipts for the repair. Today, I received a check from Lexus for the full amount of the repair including sales tax.
In hindsight, I should have driven it to the local dealership which was near the independent shop. I thought the reimbursement was going to be a battle from Lexus but it was not. I am happy they stood behind the product. Mrs. InSoCal was not too happy about the whole thing until the check arrived today.
